Smile 69 GMC 8 foot 6 inch bed 396 factory A/C

Hello All,
I was given a 69 GMC Camper Special this Weekend, it has NO DENTS in it at all, 36K original miles, has been in Southern Cal since new (Purchased in Long Beach new) Factory AC and butt ugly Huge Mirrors.
The bed is weathered badly and I thought the body needed paint, but I rubbed out a fender and then waxed it and it turned out beautiful!
The seat is ripped and the sun visors have seperated at the stictched part of the visors.
Beside that, the truck is really really nice. Is it worth keeping?
How hard would it be to convert to 4x4?
Thanks all and it looks like I will be hanging out here alot in the future.
Rick

Re: 69 GMC 8 foot 6 inch bed 396 factory A/C

the price is right.36 K is looooowwww milage. Can you document that?A lot depends on what you want in a truck. You can convert to a 4x but most want a shorter wheelbase for trails.Seat covers and visors are Cheaper than bodywork.Shoot some pics and we can give you a better Idea of what you got.Make sure and take one of the SPID inside the glovebox/

Not sure how hard it would be, but I would ask why? Might be easier to clean it up and sell or trade for a 4X4.

Re: 69 GMC 8 foot 6 inch bed 396 factory A/C

I know the original mileage is correct because I got it from the Grandson of the original owner. His Grandfather bought it originally in 69 and had a big camper on it that they took out between once and twice a Year. When the Grandfather passed, the father did not want to drive it, said it was too large for California traffic, so he passed it to his son who said it sucked way too much gas and his apartment complex would not allow for more than his one vehicle, so I got it.
I will get pictures of it tomorrow, even though only one fender is waxed up.

You Know, it's awfully hard to beat free...

If it's that nice I think I would check out all of the safety equipment, finish polishing it out and drive it....

Re: 69 GMC 8 foot 6 inch bed 396 factory A/C

Welcome to the board!
Your camper special... SHOULD be a CUSTOM CAMPER... the camper special would make it a Ford.
The 8 1/2 foot bewd makes it a fairly rare truck. The chevy version is called the Longhorn (we genericly call the GMC ones longhorns too... but they were never badged as so)
You might want to take a look at my longhorn website and see what it is exactly that you have.
There have been some turned to 4X4 (GM never offered it) but it sounds like a lot of work.

Re: 69 GMC 8 foot 6 inch bed 396 factory A/C

We talked about this before, but the reason it has low mileage and has no dents is because it was purchased and used as a recreational vehicle and not a work truck. Enjoy it the way it is, you are very fortunate because these vehicles require the least amount of work and are very well optioned.

Your truck is a pretty rare combo.
However, it is not the same as the original poster is talking about. Yours is just an option package, while his is a seperate model (I hate the way GMC did that, made things real confusing for ppl)
Also, the last part, of a 67 camper special... it'd have to be a ford. Chevy didn't make any.

I wouldn't keep it. No. Not at all.
My cousin & I will be down this weekend to pick it up & take if off your hands.

All kidding aside, you got yourself one helluva deal there, Bud.

I'd hang on to it.

I have a '72 GMC that has less than 36K original miles because it was originally purchased with an 11' slide in camper. The original owner used it for camping/fishing/hunting.
Ditto for the 2nd owner, the guy I bought it from.

It looks like a POS because it's never been garaged (see note about camper) and the exterior/paint is trashed, the interior is gone (you can only heat that stuff up to 140 so many times before it deteriorates)
But it runs and drives great.

Keep it, fix it, and if you want; turn it for a big profit. (Yeah, I know, anything you get out of it would be a profit)
