Looking at buying a 1970 lifted chevy truck.its got a fresh 350 mild cam,4 speed tranny, w/t 3.73 gears and i think 38/15 tires.i was wondering what kinda gas milage do you think it would get, i know its not gunna be anything great but my daily driver now gets around 12.

So you're looking to make an even move? I would guess you will get about the same with this 4X4.You may do a little better/worse depending on your driving habits.

With them big tires and a 350 it will take forever to get her up to speed but it should cruise nice. My 4x4 gets about 10 to12 with 35's and an OD. 4.09 gears.

If was a new vehicle, you'd have to pay a Gas Guzzler tax on it....

Re: expected gas milage

I would expect 8 - 10, unless you have a LOT of freeway cruising, and keep your foot out of it.
Also, the terrain is important too... if "bville" (where ever that is) has a lot of hills, then I'd say 8 - 10 is a goal that you may not see.

What he said, my 86 with 37's and 4 speed gets about 8mpg on a good day with 4:56's and with 3:42's and 35's it only got about 10mpg.

Re: expected gas milage

Don't waste your time changing those 3.73's to 3.42's. Those 3.73's are about as high a gear as you would want. 4.10's are often a very good gear ratio for 35" tires.

I'll be surprised if you get better than 8-10 mpg. Those 35's are heavy, 14.5" is a a wide contact patch and your pushing a lifted brick.

Enjoy it and don't focus on the mileage, otherwise you won't want to drive it.

Re: expected gas milage

8-10, us 2wd guys with 350's, and 28in tires are only averaging 12-16mpg...lol. Old trucks are great, look good, and get a lot of compliments. I agree, don't look at the gas gauge, or it may make you sick, focus on looks, and driving it. I don't think any of us like the mileages, we love our Chevys though. IMO, just because the economy sucks, and gas prices are out the roof, doesn't mean that these old gas guzzlers have to all be left on feilds, and barns, and rust into the ground.

Re: expected gas milage

When my 4x4 was a 350 with a straight stick, I got 10mpg in mixed towing my boat and running around town. The few times I took it out on the highway without my boat the best I saw was 13.5 mpg.

Expect those numbers. However if your speedo isn't tracking with a GPS or some other standard like 1 minute exactly between mile markers, you'll never know what you are getting.
