having half a fit with big block headers
Test-fit the headers today on the 454.
Passenger side just touches the frame - no problema. Driver's side needs another 1/2 inch to clear tower on the bottom of the #1 tube. Don't really want to get out the big hammer - will the tubular aftermarket towers solve this problem? (current towers are small block with the hole elongated slightly to line up with the mount on the engine) I know some of you guys have solved this problem - help will be appreciated. |

Re: having half a fit with big block headers
if you want total clearance without cutting up a mount you can use these mounts. And this is my big block build thread http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=259536

Re: having half a fit with big block headers
When I did my Burb,I used headers for the '73-'87 trucks. I trimmed the top flange of the frame rail on both sides, using a '73-'87 frame as a template. As for motor mounts I again used the '73 and newer mounts with custom built brackets. It looks like the tubular ones that Chevy Fleetside used would be the solution to that problem for you.

Or anyone else - who makes the stock-looking mounts in your first pic? I've found the tubular type kit at Brothers but would rather go with the first type if possible. Thanks for the other replies - I'm stuck with the earlier style (up to '72) headers. |

I have some 83 towers, will have to buy the other style mounts, but I'll give those a try to save the $140 for the tubular kit. Thanks again. |

Re: having half a fit with big block headers
No, No....I was just joking with ya. It's not really that much work IMO. It's mostly just knowing what to do.

Re: having half a fit with big block headers
I didn't realize that is what headers you have. In that case you should be able to just switch out your current motor mount frame brackets with some '69-'72 big block frame brackets. They are made such that they have an indent on in the top area to clear the exhaust manifolds, which should work with the headers since that is their intended application. If you need a pic let me know.

Re: having half a fit with big block headers
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/he...olet/model/c20 They sure did go up in price. I would use the 3/4 chevelle headers. These hang down pretty low.

Re: having half a fit with big block headers
Here are some shorty headers for a 70 Chevelle. I am not 100% sure if they will work. Someone on here dose though. I would probably order one of the shorty headers. If they didn't fit I can always send them back. I'm sure someone will chime in with the right answer.
