fuel gauge problem - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

ok guys you helped me perfectly with my last question, got another one for ya. My new toy is a 85 K20 4x4 with a 82 Sierra cab, (Northern Maine winters), my problem is the chasis had dual tanks, cab had single, fuel gauge is pegged past full, I have checked, an installed a new ground from fuel tank. Going to install a new tank eventually (drivers side is one missing), where do I start my diagnosis from here?? Any help, or suggestions will be greatly appreciated thanks

usually when the tank is pegged like that i fool with the brown wire on the tank and it gets back to normal..my truck is a left hand tank tho

ok guys here is what i have done so far, dropped the tank last nite, all the wiring had been butchered not once, twice, possibly 3 or 4 times butt connectors everywhere!!! Everything from the cab forward is all new wiring, including ground wire from tank, still no change with the fuel gauge is there a way to test just the gauge???? Is there anything specific to check as far as the instrument cluster, i.e. bad connection, no connection??

When the needle is pegged.. more than likely it's a ground problem.. check your other grounds too.. engine, frame, even the ground from the tails to the frame.. shorts are a pain in the neck, I tell ya!
