Starter Question.
Will the Starter off of a '72 (2wd) 292 w/a granny low 4-speed work on '72 350 (4wd) w/the same trans. I have the Starter off of the 6-cyl, it is a brand new Napa Reman, from what I can see it looks the same externally, I imagine it would come down to a matter of meshing with the Flywheel.

if you look it up at autozone, it says they require two different starters ...

didn't think of looking there, but if you look closely, the Valuecraft (3635S) one is the Same for both. the 4x is a K20, if that makes a difference.

I't been many years ago, but I'm pretty sure I used the same starter when I coverted from 250 three speed to 350/350 on my 69 Chevy.
I've always figured they were interchangeable and didn't have any problems. Anyway here's a bump in case someone has a different opinion or has recently done this. |

It should work. GM starters (of our era) are all the same frame. If it doesnt bolt up, it's an easy swap to change the starter nose from one starter to the other.

As long as the tooth count on the flywheel is the same. Since the starter bolts to the bellhousing.

They should fit but sometimes they designate the heavy duty starter. The HD starter can be identified by the spacer between the terms. comeing out of the motor & the connection at the selinoid. The HD starter has 2 terms. comeing out of the motor & about 3/4 in space to the selinoid. The light duty has the term hooking right to the selinoid or only has one term.

Apparently it must be the Right one, because it is in and working, and Oh baby does it work.... no more rrrrr-rrr-rrrr-rrrr-Vroom, its rrt-vroom now
 The one I put in is at least a half and inch longer throughout. |
