Tracking Device
I am restoring a 69Camaro and I found something that looks like some sort of a tracking device. Anyone have an idea what this can be?
It was hotwired to the cigarette lighter, and connected to ground, this were the only connections. The device had a 12V battery attached to it, and an antenna under the dashpad. The device was found hidden behind the kickpanel. |

Re: Tracking Device
Sounds like a tracking beeper device or an audio eavesdropping bug transmitter. Most of those use a 9-volt battery though, from what I've heard.
Conspircay Theory, anyone ????? |

Re: Tracking Device
Transmitting device of some kind, because of the FCC paper tag with it.
Should be able to find out what that is by checking the FCC number with them. I'm betting on a Lojack type anti-theft tracking device, though I wouldn't really know one if I saw one. Somebody on here will know more than I do about those. |

Re: Tracking Device
It appears to be a paging unit that was popular on alarms in the 80's.
I'll bet that there was an alarm that someone already removed but left the page unit behind because they lost the dedicated pager. The box would have had a red hot wire, a black ground wire, and an orange "trigger" wire that would have sent the paging signal when it recieved a ground input from the alarm brain. The supplemental battery allowed the signal to be sent even if the main vehicle battery has been disconnected. based on my years spent as a MECP certified audio/security/cellular installler that's my best guess. No orange cable, only red 12V+ and black grounded. And a black coax antenna under the dashpad.

Re: Tracking Device
I think he means this one went to the alarm sys, (the trigger wire). If alarm has been removed then the wire wouldnt be hooked up.

Re: Tracking Device
Because it was attached to the cigarette lighter I think it may be an anti- smoking warning devise. It is installed to send a signal to your wife every time you use the lighter to light your cig. These units were sold by the anti-smoking people to rat out husbands who promised their wife they would stop smoking and then smoked in their cars. Not many people know about them because the program was kept a secret. As years passed and guys sold their cars the devices were discovered hidden in different places in the cars by the new owners. Those wives and anti-smoking people will go to any extent to advance their no smoking agendas. LOL

Re: Tracking Device
Sorry to mislead you RunninLo. One orange and one black cable to the battery, one black to ground and red one to 12V+. No triggerwire for alarm

Re: Tracking Device
no worries norwegian. It's been at least 15 years since I've seen a paging unit anyway so I was mostly grasping. FWIW I'm glad the went with the 2 way in the remote fob instead of the pagers. My #1 least favorite alarm feature was the REALLY old style that had a keyed lock cylinder that a lot of people mounted in the driver fender just behind the wheel opening. I still cringe when I think of all the mint sheetmetal that got a hole in it.

Re: Tracking Device
it is probably an alarm pager as suggested...
HOWEVER, I will suggest a different story: Step 1) cheating spouse Step 2) private detective Step 3) messy divorce ...ask me how I know. --steve
