T-5 in a '72 C-10?

I've been wanting to put an Overdrive Trans in my '72 C-10 for a while now and I believe the easiest and most simple choice would be a T-5 from an '83 to '86 S-10.

I know they are not the strongest, but it is for a daily driver and there will be no racing involved.

Looking for input from others who made this swap and also need to know exactly what would be involved to make the swap.

I was also told that a T-5 from a V-6 S-10 would be stronger.

The truck now is a 307, 3-Speed.

Would appreciate any other opinions and/or info on it.

If this has been covered before and if someone could provide a link to it, that would also be appreciated.

Re: T-5 in a '72 C-10?

only a 4.3 S-10 or 2.5 S-10 would work. The 2.8 wouldn't bolt up.
The Camaro one would be a tad stronger, but the shifter would be under the seat (assuming bench seat) and you'd have to fab up an 18 degree (or something like that) angle shim for the mounting.
A 307 won't stress a T-5 too much.

NV3500 is the way to go. I did the swap and it was easy. The shifter is in the perfect spot also.

Re: T-5 in a '72 C-10?

Longhorn Man,

I found this chart on another board. Some of the applications lists the 2.5 and the 2.8 as the same trans. ???

Looks like one from a Minivan may be a good choice.

I'm not familiar with the NV3500. Wondering what vehicles they were in and would it be just as easy of a swap. For example, does it have a mechanical clutch.

(You all can probably tell I'm from the old school. Anything past 1972 and I'm kind of lost).

Re: T-5 in a '72 C-10?

it's wrong. The bellhousing is not the same size. the internals may be the same, but not the body.
The 2.8 and 3.0 are 90 degree engines. I'm sure there are more, but those two I am SURE of... and I think the 2.8 is the only 90 degree V 6 to go into a rear wheel drive aplication anyways.

Re: T-5 in a '72 C-10?

Nv3500 or the muncie % speed that was found in some of the 88-98 chevy1/2tons would be stronger and cost about the same.
You would have to add the hydraulic master to opporate the clutch, it is pretty easy and works way better.

Re: T-5 in a '72 C-10?

with a 307, i don't think strength would be much of an issue.

That's totally incorrect. You bolt it up directly to a '67 and earlier bellhousing or you can make a ring so that it fits snug in the '68 and later bellhousing.

Read what I have written in the posts above and follow the links as well, to read everything I've written. It's a piece of cake. Don't let all the misinformation scare you like it did me. The S-10 version is NOT the easiest and is actually the most complicated version of the swap, however it can be done and many have.

Brad... I left out an important part on that, and thanks for bringing it to my attention...
The mounting for the tranny mount, where it mounts at an angle. (the camaro verson)

NP
Hmmm, just to make sure we're on the same page and the OP isn't confused like I am at this point, The Camaro trans bolts straight up to the original bellhousing just like any other Muncie, Saginaw, or ____. There's no good reason for someone to use the aluminum Camaro bellhousing on these trucks but if they must then the trans would be at an 18* angle.
I do know of a guy that was going to use the Camaro bellhousing in an old Chevy II along with the hyd. linkage, but I can say with authority that the original linkage is easier on the leg and waaaaaaay less complicated.

LockDoc and Brad,

Appreciate the links. I just went to them and read them over quick, but I'll need to go back and study on them.

Thanks again to everyone who helped.

That's what I am interested in hearing. I would like to use all the original clutch linkage with the swap.

Re: T-5 in a '72 C-10?

I have made this swap. I run a T5 in my 327 68 truck. Original bell housing, clutch, and linkage all fit. I run the 88 Camaro-T/A version because it is a World Class and strongest of the T5. Bolts right up. No tranny brace. The input spline is fine (26 ct.) grooves. I had the shop put a S-10 top shifter plate and rear tailhousing on to move the shifter forward. I run a bench seat with NO interference problems. A shortened drive shaft and you are done. OBTW you will have to change the speedo gears to get your speedo to work correctly. I used the camaro 0-85 speedo gears and used the white face vinyl covers on all my guages and had my speedo a 0-85 markings. Very accurate. Please reply or private message with any other questions. I'll be happy to help.
