I think some guys run a 2wd box for cross over steering but not for a stock application.

A 2wd steering box will work in a 4x4. Guys do it all the time to run crossover steering. To run the 2wd box with the stock draglink and steering arm, you'll need to pull the pitman arm off and clock it over 90* to the driver's side to put it into a front to back sweep as opposed to side to side.

Getting ready to replace my steering box also, curious what is the advantage of the cross over steering with a 2wd box or is there any?

do you use the piman arm from the 4wd or 2wd. If i do clock it over 90* then will it still be long enough. Also will a 73 steerin box work on a 72.

The 4wd pitman arm will only go on a 4wd box and in only one position due to the key in the splines. The 2wd pitman and sector shaft are just splined...no keys or keyway. You can put it on in any orientation you want.

Yes, you can use a later model box on the earlier frames.

Watch the line type. In 81 they switched over from flared hydraulic lines to o-ringed.

Pete, the 2x4 box rotates side to side, the 4x4 box rotates front to back. Yes it will bolt up but two different configs.

Re: can i put a 2wd steerin box on 4wd.

We used to do the cross over steering when we had big lifts and large tires and it really helped. The stock style 4x4 steering runs from the box right to the top of the drivers side knuckle and as you lift the vehicle your pitman arm starts getting a very steep angle even with that C style drop arm. With cross over steering you can keep a more flat steering angle and you will gain a tighter turning radius.
