Head Removal

I'm taking apart my 350 but can not get one of the heads off. The passenger side came right off, but the drivers side seems stuck on the number one piston area where the block and head meet. I have tried tapping/pulling the head off but it won't budge. We even took the crank out and removed the number one piston and tried tapping the head with a piece of wood but it will not come off. Anyone else have any problems getting their heads off?

Re: Head Removal

I'm sure you've triple checked this, but I gotta ask......You sure you got ALL the bolts out?

Don't get mad, no offense intended, just had to ask.

Big screwdriver & a deadblow. Aim the screwdriver down in the front or rear of the motor, between the head & the block & use your imagination from there. Repeat if necessary...

Re: Head Removal

If the screw driver is used be careful not to gall the deck surfaces. I'm a big fan of the pry bar in the intake ports pulling toward you standing on the exhaust side.

Re: Head Removal

A small block Chev has 17 head bolts http://boxwrench.net/specs/chevy_sb.htm Scroll down.

Take one more look and make sure each and every head bolt hole is empty and then do as Corn and or Primered Junk suggested.
e
I went out and double checked in my favorite old shop manual and a small block Chevy does have 17 head bolts.

I have actually seen small block heads that were broken along the bottom bolt row when someone used a big prybar to get the head loose and broke it along the whole row of bolts

Re: Head Removal

wow, I will have to double check and make sure I'm not missing a bolt now. Had no idea there were 17 bolts..That might have saved me from a bigger problem
