Are they really needed?
hey guys, my truck is getting closer to paint, i just took off the drip rails to do the body work underthem then put them back on. but what i want to know is how needed are they? i live in kansas where it rains quite a bit, and dont know if i will need them. i have shaved my mirrors and the door handles/locks, and the drip rail would look sweet if it wasnt there. so is there anyway i can maybe buy new weatherstrips to seel my truck from rain?

Re: Are they really needed?
keep rain from pooling in the top of the door area and soaking you when getting in and out of the truck.

Re: Are they really needed?
I've never been a victim, but I've heard of guys getting soaked like what 84 400 said. I think these trucks look cleaner without them.

Re: Are they really needed?
I can only offer what others have told me. I am keeping mine but from what I have been told the water won't get in the cab if you have a good door weather stripping . Howevver it will pool between the crack and the seal area which could get inside when the door is open. Also this could be a trap for water and cause rust... but alot of our trucks rust here regardless if you have the drip rail or not. Most i have talked to who have shaved it where happy they did.

Re: Are they really needed?
It shouldn't if you've got good weatherstripping but you might..

Re: Are they really needed?
if theres water on the roof when you sit down, the water well run off un your lap. mine are shaved, its not a daily driver, but if I happen to be out & it does rin, Ive learned to get the water off the roof before opening the doors.

Re: Are they really needed?
I took the drip rails off my 78 back in 91 and I just took them off my 84. There was never any problems with the 78 thats why I took them off my 84.

Re: Are they really needed?
All I can say that don't hop out of the truck very quickly after you open the door. This is first hand experience - you will get soaked!!
