Oil pan gasket, please help!!! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey guys I have a 70 blazer with a 350/465 and I noticed a drip forming from what appeared to be the front main seal on my oil pan and decided that i would go ahead and install a new 1 pc gasket. As it turns out I am having a really difficult time removing the oil pan because of the engine crossmember. I have removed the engine mount bolts and jacked the engine enough to put scrap 2x4 pieces between the mounts and crossmember and dropped the oil pump down into the pan so it can move more freely but still no luck... Please tell me i don't have to pull the engine to get this thing out. -Tristan

Did you try turning the crank to see if you can get some clearance. It's been a long time for me but I do remember having some trouble also. I also remember turning the crank and getting some clearance.

Anyway, here's a bump in case someone's done it recently.

hmm if its like my 72 c10 they are just the funnest thing to do...its just that front seal that goes in your timing chain cover?? if so you dont even have to pull the oil pan...but it does make it easier to get that timing chain cover off. To get the oil pan off prob jack it up about as high as you can get it that is what i did and undo the tranny mounting bolts also dont wanna twist something too bad

Not only that but if you got the same blue one piece I got, it will not fit your pan. Mine leaked like a seive until I put the stock pan gasket back in.

Be careful when you jack the engine that you don't break the distributor cap when it hits the firewall.

When I did mine I had to remove the crossmember. It only took me about 3 hrs total.

This was my first thought also. to be on the safe side I would remove it. especially if your running a H.E.I. distributor.

Did it leak from the front? They have 2 styles. A thick and a thin lower timing cover seal.

Yep....front, side everywhere. It was basically too thick all around but more so in the front for sure. I guess he got the wrong one.
