Re: whats the purpose of shaving firewalls??

I guess the best way to answer your question is to also ask what the purpose is to upgrade rims and tires, perform engine upgrades and paint our vehicles bright outlandish colors???

Why chop a top? Why shave door handles? Why use tweed in your interior???

Why change your 3-speed manual to a 4 speed automatic?

Honestly there is no real purpose to it all... but wait... maybe just one..

'Cause its cool... and we all have differing opinions on whats cool...guess that is what makes this sport and site so darn fun to be a part of!

In the dumpster, trash can, etc.

Whats the purpose of shaved firewalls?
Whats the purpose of a posi trac in a 67 hemi
Whats the purpose of getting up in the A.M. and going to work
Whats the purpose of copulation for reproducing the human species
Whats the purpose of mw being a smart A$$ LOL!!!
Most of us really do dispose of the blower assy and heater core as well as all the rest of it. You can get some pretty cool heater units then you still have heater hoses being ugly under the hood. I would save a shaved firewall for a non daily vehicle.

Re: whats the purpose of shaving firewalls??

I`m not trashing anyone who shaves their cowls. But,looking at the list above I don`t see the comparison. All other things listed actually serve a functional purpose.
My perspective comes from years of being around these trucks and I just see it as another cut dash, sunroof, speakers in doors, etc.People years from now will be asking WTF?Or,at least the same question this thread starter has asked. It looks cool, but I hate faggep glass in a summer thunderstorm and live where some of the best cruisin`weather is now, when you can use a touch of heat. You can go out and spend $1,300 for a new HVAC if you`re going that far.I may actually do the same thing, but not without considerig that I`m trashing perfectly good factory metal.
I`ve done sunroofs, speakers, cut fenders, drilled holes, trimmed frames...Just something to think about.I see guys cussing cut doors for speakers while shaving firewalls. It`s all fads and time keeps changing them.I thought Vettes with 3 tailights and flared fenders looked cooler than stock back in the`60s and `55 Chevy cars with arched rear wheel wells.I`m no elitist or purist.I have a hard time not modifying. But,I`d just like to know that guys wantin to carve up a cab at least take the big picture into account when deciding to make this mod.

Re: whats the purpose of shaving firewalls??

The motor blower goes right under the dash now it works like a champ and the engine compartment does not look like a bowl of spaguetti...

Re: whats the purpose of shaving firewalls??

My purpose for shaving the firewall in my truck was because I HATE congested engine compartments. I like the engine bay to be as clean as possible.
Here is a before and after shot, exactly the reason why I did it...

Re: whats the purpose of shaving firewalls??

Some guys just like it shaved as well! some guys don't...

As stated the newer A/C heater units are self contained under the dash, also guys do custom wiring to reroute all the wires that came through the firewall. I have a pic of what all the holes are for...

Re: whats the purpose of shaving firewalls??

Heres a question on the subject. Can you do away the heater under the hood and get some type of unit for under the dash just for heat only????

I agree with Big Al. I shaved mine to clean up the engine compartment.

Re: whats the purpose of shaving firewalls??

I shaved the firewall and have gone with an aftermarket A/C and heater. You still have to run the hoses, but thats all that goes on the firewall.

Re: whats the purpose of shaving firewalls??

Guys do it to clear turbos, too. The whole "reason" for shaving/smoothing anything is cosmetic. If you go to Vintage Air or one of those underdash units you`ll have the holes left there. It won`t be finished looking. There are covers for that area.
