Gas Tank

Are the gas tanks the same for 73-87? Example, I have a 1980 stepside (short) with the tank on the passenger side. My bed has a provision for dual tanks, fuel door on both sides. What are my tank options?

A local person has 2 tanks listed and claims all 73-87 tanks are the same for either side long or short bed. I just don't know enough about the tanks.

Thanks!

Re: Gas Tank

SWB's get 16 gallon tanks ONLY
LWB's have 20 gallon as the main and 20 as the auxillary, although some had 16's.

The actual tank is the same left/right, but the sender and mounting is specific left/right, although I just heard of some people turning the sending unit around.

Re: Gas Tank

87 is different they have a metal cage in the tank where the fuel pump sits down in.I used one with my 85 sending unit and the guage would never read under 1/4 tank cuz that cage would not let the float go down far enough but other then that they are all the same

Re: Gas Tank

just installed a new tank on my '80 and they are different than the 81-87 tanks....the hole for the filler neck is smaller on the 80 and older, larger on the 81-87 (have one of these tanks here to) So you would need to change the rubber hose and steel extension line the fuel cap screws into to make things fit right....no biggy if you get all the parts with the tank.
Otherwise no external difference.
