Question about D70 in a 89 1 ton 4x4

I have a 89 1 ton 4x4 454 truck that has a dana 70 in it and the gear code indicates 3.42 gears , i have been looking around at available gearsets for the d70 and all i find is 3.54 . is it possible that the rear gear is 3.54 and front is 3.42 ? eventually i will pull cover and count teeth , but just curios if that was the case , the rear is in the faor sale section and i wanted to be accurate in its listing .

Thanks
John

John, what code are you looking up to deteremine that it is a 3.42?

I am not positive but I vbelieve yor research is correct and that the D70 does not come with a 3.42.

Re: Question about D70 in a 89 1 ton 4x4

This page lists that gear for it ( I think I read it correctly)

http://www.drivetrain.com/gm10.5.html

Now I do this alot, as I am not a super rearend guy (well at least not on truck...women though )

You sure its a D70 and not a 14 bolt GM Corporate?

Well, I am lost then. GM version 10-bolt has that code and ratio, but like you said, no D70 with that ratio.

I wonder if it was swapped out from what came in the truck?

Edit....By your picture that is not a Dana, that is a GM 10 bolt

K30 and K3500 is the same thing,1t 4wd.I didn`y know any Dana was still used after the end of the`70s.I think those codes are screwy. They are probably 3.54s.That`s a Dana ratio and I doubt theres another that close.I think that may be the tallest gear Dana offered in 60s and 70s.

Re: Question about D70 in a 89 1 ton 4x4

My 89 had the 70 in it when I first got it. And Dana 70s were used up to the late 90s in a bunch of different applications. If the tag is GU6, it has 3.42s. The Dana 70 3HD is a screwy axle, it doens't use any other D70 stuff, other than wheel bearings of stuff like that. Dana expert lists it on their site too...

Drop the cover and look at the numbers on the ring gear. That's the best way to tell for sure.
