1 Ton Axle & Crossover steering inspection?

I need a little help.

I'm looking to purchase D60/14bff axles this weekend. What problems should I be looking for? The axles are out of a CUCV so they have 4:56 gears and the rear has a detroit locker.

The D60 recently was installed in a '68 and the guy has a high steer/crossover steering kit he would sell seperately. I am putting the axles under my '72 so everything should just bolt right in. He says he'd consider $250 for the everything including the steering box, pitman, etc... I know they are 4-500 new, is this a fair price for used and what problems should I look for with this?

Do you know who made the crossover setup? There are a ton of different arms being made nowa days. Pics would help alot too...some crossovers are booty fab scary too, and if your lift is drastically diffenrent it may not simply bolt in..sometimes you save money in the long run by getting new setup that is made for your rig...I just hate buying parts twice.

Let me know if you need help. I may live nearby and I have a fair bit of experience with these trucks and offroad ones in general.

Depending on the condition, the raw parts are certainly worth it.

I'd ask, what components did he use, stock one ton Chevy Tie Rod Ends, Drag links, etc. DOM tubing for the steering links? Who's pitman arm, is it flat or dropped, etc?

I'll see if I can get pictures and answers to Grendel's Q's about the crossover steering. Is there a general range of previous lift which will potentially fit or does it depend on the

Also I don't plan on being seriously aggresive my first year with this truck (I keep telling myself that) so my guess is I don't really need the crossover out of the gate. I'm wondering if I should save my cash and invest elsewhere and then buy a new crossover setup the year after. Of course on the other hand I wonder if $250 is cheap enough to buy it and if I don't like/want/need it just re-sell it.

I think I'm getting a great deal on the axles based on the pricing I've seen. I'd like to make sure the internals are solid. I plan on taking the covers off and looking for obvious stuff like missing teeth but what else should I be looking at?

Here is some more details on the cross over steering...


He made it. Uses the factory tie rods. One bar is dom tube and the other is factory tie rod that was cut to length and threaded for factory gm sleeves.

It comes complete with a 2wd steering box and a f$%d style 4" dropped steering arm.

The previous truck ('68 Blazer) had a 6" lift which is what I'm thinking about.

He also mention a LIFT BLOCK that goes under the steering if I don't want the cross over?? What is that for?

hmmm 69 was the first year for Blazers
You need to post up pics...homemade works for some fab guys but others can be down right dangerous

So I bought the axles, they look to be in great shape. Got the spring plates as well but not Ubolts... anyone got some?

I passed on the crossover/highsteer. The high steer and the plates looked well done but the cross over and the pump didn't impress me.

I did buy the Steering block. Looks very well made and should help the steering geometry when I add the lift.

I have ubolts. I had them made at Donovan Spring.

I would do cross over steering and get rid of the push pull set up.
