Can anyone tell me what the heck this stupid bump is?

I want to box in my frame but do not know what this does or if I can shave it. Anyone know? Thanks.

Re: Can anyone tell me what the heck this stupid bump is?

that's clearance for the fuel pump on the big blocks. No clue why they raised it instead of trimming it.

you can bend it, trim it... what ever you want. It isn't doing anything in all reality, big block or not.

Re: Can anyone tell me what the heck this stupid bump is?

ive always thought it was clearance for the oil filter on the inline 6's is it a dual purpose or was it just a Coincidence?

Re: Can anyone tell me what the heck this stupid bump is?

it showed up in 68, the same year the big block did ... and 67s had the inline (both sizes) and no flair in that location.
Plus... if you look real hard in this photo...

Re: Can anyone tell me what the heck this stupid bump is?

i can see the clearance issue. So, is this a pic of a big block? And, is a small block going to have this issue?

yes, that is a big block, and no, there is plenty of room on a small block.

Re: Can anyone tell me what the heck this stupid bump is?

i'm might be wrong but , i think it's bent up for the clearance of the fuel pump as said and still keep's the frame strong instead of a cut out . i'll have to check out my 67 now , way cool ... thanks for the new info

Re: Can anyone tell me what the heck this stupid bump is?

NGN, you are correct. It is a way to create clearance and add vertical stiffness to the frame in that location. Boxing the frame will accomplish the same thing, as long as there is no interference.

Re: Can anyone tell me what the heck this stupid bump is?

Yeah,I wouldn`t just go trimming that and leaving it.That flare is still giving alot of strength on the verticle plain. But,boxing it will make it stronger yet.

I`m curious. Why are you boxing your frame?

Re: Can anyone tell me what the heck this stupid bump is?

Sorry man, but my '67 has it too and it is definitely a 67 frame because it doesn't have the stupid notch for the power steering...

The pic sucks, but it's there.

My 67 frame has the "fin" as well. Now all we need is the Jimmy Buffet song.. "fins to the left, fins to the right"

Re: Can anyone tell me what the heck this stupid bump is?

M y 67 had it and it was a inline 6 and the long filter fit nicely my current 68 big block model has it , the fuel pump is lost in that area .....

The 6 oil filter does look like the original reason for the frame tweek. I'll be dipped in ....

Re: Can anyone tell me what the heck this stupid bump is?

I guess the question now is, does the 60-66 frame (which I understand to be very similar to the 67-72) have the same notch, presumably for the oil filter change?

Edit:

After a bit of searching, it appears the 60-66 trucks have the notch as well, it looks a little different, but it IS there. Borrowed this from ChiefRokca's build thread:

Re: Can anyone tell me what the heck this stupid bump is?

It probably didn't need the same notch as they didn't use the same 6-cylinder. The 235 CI 6 doesn't have the oil filter positioned in the same location. Also, if I remember right, they didn't use twist on filters then either. We still used the toilet-paper canister filters.
