Help a newbie?

I'm looking to buy a 67-72 short bed. Are there any special things I might look out for when I am out kicking tires?

Here's my story, if you care to read it...

I have a '73 POS Ford F250. It has a rebulit 460 V8. I bought the truck from a friend and thought I was getting a good deal, but I think I got hosed. He didn't do it on purpose. I should have researched values a little better before I bought it.

I paid $1,200 for this truck which I've had a year. Since I bought it, I had to have the radiator rebuilt, heater core replaced, I did belts, plugs, cap, rotor, wires, hoses, fuel pump, Flowmaster duals, K&N and a custom steering wheel.

The truck still lets me sit at the least opportune time. Just dies while I'm driving it. Maybe the carb, maybe something in the tank.

Anyway, I thought this was gonna be my keeper truck, hence all the repairs. But I realized once I took a good look at a '70 shortbed that that was what I was meant to own.

I'm wanting to go for the low, but not slammed look. 2wd with a manual tranny. Thats what I've found and am gonna try to work a deal on come Monday. Wish me luck.

I want an old Camaro that I can haul a dirtbike in. El Caminos just seem a little too "Joe Dirt" for me, so the SWB Chevy seems the optimal choice.

I also own a '68 Plymouth Fury which I got from the original owner. The little old man who took care of his stuff. I'm in the process of trying to trade in the Fury an a grand cash for a recently repainted (dark met. green) SWB. It has a 6 cyl. in it now, but a friend of mine is a Chevy guy, so we can build a 327/350 for it over time. My friend has two '66 pickups and a '66 Vette.

I'm rambling here, but suffice it to say that I am excited about a possible trade to a really cool truck. It may not happen, but I know I gotta have a SWB someday! I look forward to learning about these trucks that I have just receltly come to love.

Thanks for any help you can give me! I've got a lot of reading to do!

One thing to consider, with any old vehicle (your F250, a SWB, or whatever) you're going to run into problems. You have to realize that this stuff is 30 years old. Rust, grime, abuse, and time have all taken their toll on them.

Another thing that I believe. It's better to spend a little more money for a nicer one than getting a pile of junk to fix up, cause it's going to be cheaper in the long run to get the nice one than to fix up a POS. Of course, if you get a super nice one, you're going to pay. Just my thoughts though.

the big thing to look for on it would be rust, common places are pass inner fender under the battery, rockers, cab corners, door bottoms, cab floor, and around the windshield.

Thanks guys. I'll keep those things in mind. Southern Colorado is pretty dry, so rust is pretty rare out here. At least I know the trouble spots.
