Auto floor shifter

What are you guys running for auto floor shifters? I have been thru 3 different floor shifters and can't seem to find one that fits with the original bench seat. Alos some pics would be great. BTW it is a 350/350.

Re: Auto floor shifter

That is the shifter I would like to put in but I am concerned the by the time I get the bottom plastic cover trimmed to fit the "hump" there won't be enough room to keep the cable inside of it with out kinking it.

I have a Lokar, Classic Truck floor shifter and it fits nicely on the top of the hump with plenty of room for the linkage to operate properly.

Re: Auto floor shifter

I have a Hurst Vmatic 2 if anyone needs a shifter. Everything there and the console HAS NOT been cut. I ran it in my Malibu for a year between quarter sticks.

Re: Auto floor shifter

When I first built my truck about 20 years ago, Gennie Shifter (which I previously had in my 46 Ford) didn’t offer an adjustable mounting bracket. Because Lokar was so heavily advertised I bought one of theirs instead. That stayed on my Turbo 350 for about 5 years. Although the positive shift lock feature was nice, I hated the shifter almost from the beginning. The knob rattled constantly, and later the cable inside the handle rattled louder than the knob. In temperatures below zero the grease in the handle would freeze solid rendering the button inoperable, leaving me without my daily driver. Every now and then, if not paying attention, depressing the button off center could also result in a painful split or folded back thumbnail.

By the time I had had enough, I was also tired of the long handle and Gennie now offered an adjustable mount. So I swapped to a 16” Gennie shifter instead. The locking detents on these are identical to a column shifter which I found more enjoyable for daily driving.

Here are a couple shots of the Lokar mechanism installed:

Here’s the finished Lokar installation:

And here’s what it looked like with a Gennie Shifter. I don’t have any better pictures of the Gennie installation.

The only downside to the Gennie shifter is their lousy distribution system. In researching where to buy one for a friend, Chevy of the 40's seemed to have the best pricing.

Re: Auto floor shifter

I have a b&m mega shifter and it works grate and the black boot is easy to cut but looks like crud unless you are planning on making your own center console. They should make these with a smaller boot and a longer arm.

any other ideas? markbe01, does that fit through the original 4 speed hole without cutting the hump?

Re: Auto floor shifter

As best I can remember, I think I had to trim about 1/4 to 1/2"" from the rear of the original 4 speed hole in the floor pan. Both the Lokar and Gennie could be set up to fit in the original location, but rather than being directly in the center of the hole it was closer to the rear of the hole. I used a simple aftermarket round shifter boot and it completely covered the original hole in the floor mat. This may be the best picture I have showing the boot location. I might have been able to modify the shifter mounting brackets to move it a tad further forward, but my truck was already substantially modified so I wasn't all that concerned about trimming the hole a bit:

Re: Auto floor shifter

I like the lokar for a cruiser.

In high school I put a B&M quicksilver in my 64. Ratcheting shifters are fun for banging through the gears when you've put a shift kit in the trans 14 years later the shifter is still in the truck and working great.

I too have the dual action lokar shifter, the mid height, I like it but be careful not to shift from second to neutral if manually romping on her.
