It had a plate but the gasket was old so I pulled it off and didn't know what it was for. Thanks

OK, thats what I thought. Most trucks that early did not have an EGR valve. I see you have an HEI on it, so it is getting great spark. Do you have a curve kit in it? If it were mine I'd swap out the manifold for a non-EGR one. Look in the wrecking yard for truck manifolds, they are taller and have less junk on them. The intake out of a 70 Impala looks to be a lower profile manifold. Chevy makes several good factory intakes and a good cast iron one comes from a pickup. It is a little taller, giving you longer intake runners and a little better bottom end.
