Policeman don't like my 64!...the law!

So last night was Trick or Treat in my neighborhood... We had the house all decorated and parked the 64 out front with a stuffed dummy behind the wheel with a scary mask on... As we are enjoying a few adult beverages a local policeman (captin d*ckhead) pulls up and wants to know who owns the truck... I told him it was mine... He goes on to tell me he sees me driving it around all the trime and that it is too low for the bumper laws.. Calims my front bumper has to be 12"s off the ground and to consider this a warning! WTF!!! Fully aired the bumper may be 12" off the ground but then the alignment is way out of wack! Truck is set up for 3" ride heigth! I know he will be looking for me! Looks like I will be paying for the police Christmas party this year.. The rest of the cops are so cool and have asked me questions about the truck and they tell me how much they dig it when they drive past my house.. This should be good!

Problem is he is an OLD head that knows the book front to rear! He always has Semi trucks pulled over doing the DOT inspections too!

Re: Policeman don't like my 64!...the law!

Man that reminds me of the 80's!! I had a square body with 17" of lift & 44" tires. They had an A- hole New Orleans cop that would give me a headlight ticket every time he would catch me out. It was a $75.00 non moving violation ticket, so it didnt go on your record, but i had to pay $150.00 court cost per ticket!! After 6 tickets i ended up selling my truck. I hope the cop your dealing with is not as persistant!! GOOD LUCK.

Re: Policeman don't like my 64!...the law!

do you have relatives in another state where you can claim residence?? if so then do like most of us military do and keep your registration with that state. Of course then you could get in trouble for that I guess... Can't guarantee that it will work for the bumper law but it does for tint, inspection, and fender/wheel coverage (PA can't have wide wheels outside fender)...

check this website and search for "bumper". it actually says some part of the bumper must be 16"

Re: Policeman don't like my 64!...the law!

I had this problem a few years ago with a police man....He was a rookie, and trued to show me his power...lol......Anyways i got 2 tickets from him..Both after leaving work,.For bumper height on a 92 S-10 i had..( it was on air).......3rd time he got me down the street from work...I went straight to the police station and told him he should follow me there then i filed a harassment charge on him, and a stalking charge..And in the report taken i also added that he said (a guy like me should not have a ride like that) He did say that.....All the tickets was 30 something days apart, and the times where minutes apart....Problem solved.....

Re: Policeman don't like my 64!...the law!

Being a LEO i would tell you to look up your local Vehicle codes and when/if approched again you can tell him well PA VC states this..... but make sure everything on your truck is legal if you do this. Or just accept the ticket and then tell the judge PA VC says this... and judges will say your right and let ya go.

Some LEO's are the high and mighty I HAVE A BADGE kind. i hate when i hear someone say COPS ARE PRICKS/ I HATE COPS. i say that is fine because im not a COP im a sheriff's deputy. We are not all pricks.

Re: Policeman don't like my 64!...the law!

Man what an A$$Hole..I feel for you bro.....Back in the mid to late 90's my homies and I were always getting harassed and pulled over EVERY weekend. I was driving a clean all original 64 Impala Wagon....as soon as I threw the 13" Daytons on it...see ya, it was over bro..."these guys are gang-bang'n for sure !!!"

One cop actually asked if I was a gang banger...."I was like sure, oh ya, yeap !!!"

After about a month or so...they finnally realized that I was just a cruiser and left me alone.

One smart a$$ prick told me "I know your not out for girls, cause your car is all dirty !!"

Guess I deserved that one, cause it was dirty !

Not on wood....So far they give me thumbs to my truck...then again....My bumper is not on the ground.

Re: Policeman don't like my 64!...the law!

I too have no problems with LEO's... My families garage services the state troopers cars and 3 local departments so alot of my friends are cops.. Its there job to keep people and communities safe.. But to stop at my house and tell me (Note, I never had the police at my house for ANYTHING, I am 33 and have gotten 1 ticket my whole life, and always try to do the right thing) that my bumper is to low while there are cars speeding down the road in front of the house and other people out there that need arrested... I do have a problem with that.. Get a life!!

So I looked up vehicle code and it sez 16"...So I will give him his 12".. So are these measurements to the top of the bumper or from the bottom of the bumper to the ground ??? to the top wouldn't be a big deal... from the bottom NO WAY!

mount some 5mph shock/bumper brackets behind the grille, take some pics, and then claim that the grille is the bumper..... wouldn't be much different than my wifes grand prix, and its plastic bumper.

Build a temp bumper bracket to move your bumper even with your headlights, and sit back and wait

I can't believe he had to be such an @$$.... best of luck with him. I have a lot of friends that are LEO's and sometimes it just depends on the day they are having.

Re: Policeman don't like my 64!...the law!

I think just part of it has to be 16" so a 4" bumper could be 12". Does it get inspected or is it antique?

I would do some research with the DMV and inspection stations. Print off the VC quoting the height and keep it legal while riding around. I agree that it's not right to harass you while your not driving it and out with the family. Good luck...

Remember that it also states if the bumper has been moved from the original location then they use the frame height...

Re: Policeman don't like my 64!...the law!

Here in Washington its measured from the bottom of the bumper and in the absence of a bumper its measured from the orginal mounting point of the bumper.

Of course I was always frowned upon because my Jeep bumper was to high. I can't wait to be told I'm to low in my truck.

Like mentioned I know the LEO's are doing their Jobs, but I sware it almost appears that they harrass those that they can out of convience opposed to chasing down the ones that are actually causing problems.

here in Cali I have never been told about the bumber issue. They have always said nothing can be lower than the bottom of the rim. Thats where 35 series tires come into play.

I looked at the link posted above and it read within 16" of the ground. This tells me that it cannot be above 16" Most of these laws where written because of the danger when a big truck hits a car. I would definately look the code up and read it literally.

I was once pulled over on my motorcycle and told my inspection sticker was illegal because the officer could not see it from inside his car. The texas law read it must be placed near your license plate. Mine was stuck to the back of the plate Can't get any closer then that. I kept a copy of the code under my seat and showed it to the officer.
