Has anyone swapped power steering into thier 67 2WD?

Howdy,

New guy to this forum, and somewhat new to 67-72 Chevys. Formerly a Blue Oval guy, but as far as trucks go, you just cant get any better looking than A 67-72 Chevy. So Iv'e put away my blue oval and am now wearing a BOWTIE. A 67 stepside 283/3 spd bowtie.

So, first of many questions: What does swapping this thing over to power steering entail, and what is the BEST junkyard P/S box for this application?
Thanks much.

Re: Has anyone swapped power steering into thier 67 2WD?

I pulled the ENTIRE steering linkage, PS pump, and everything from a 71. Have not yet swapped it in, I need some additional brackets and to clean the whole thing off quite a bit and make sure its all healthy.

Re: Has anyone swapped power steering into thier 67 2WD?

Thanks bro.

I am wondering if 73- up has a quicker steering ratio.

Are they the same from 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton? I have several setups available, to include one from an 71 SB-powered 3/4 ton. But then there is the 77 K-10 1/2 ton with power steering, .....so....

Thanks.

Re: Has anyone swapped power steering into thier 67 2WD?

I wouldn't bet on it because I didn't do the install; but I think my '69 has all the stuff from a '72, or thereabouts, van.
I'm here to tell ya, it's plenty quick.

Hope that helped a bit.

Up to around '87 will fit just fine except after about the early '80's they went to a metric fitting on the box.

Re: Has anyone swapped power steering into thier 67 2WD?

My '67 has a '79 PS box on it, but it's not short ratio - I've heard that some guys don't like the power steering with the short ratio, the steering can feel a little squirrely. They are easy to do, but you have to have/make the dimple or put spacers to accomodate the PS box. You may have to cut the bumper bracket a little as well.

Re: Has anyone swapped power steering into thier 67 2WD?

There are a lot of ways to go with this.IIRC 4X4 is different, remember to get the pulleys for the crank when yu get the set-up.Also make sure the brackets are for a SBC since the 250,292, and big block ones are different. Some also run into issues with the long/short water pump. There is a FAQ's listing.Search member Krue he has a link in his signature. It will give you lots more info and may ahve a applications list also.

I put power steering on my 67 a few week's ago and I got a new rubuilt box for a 72 it is quicl ratio and drive's a little different but I like it a lot better , I put 4 spacer's to make the box clear the frame , and mine is touching the bumper bracket I am gonna remove the bumper bracket and cut a small section out so the box don't rub the bracket ,,,
I made some modification's to the pump and bracket setup I used so that it just use's one belt to turn the alt / pump , but you will have an easy time finding v8 bracket's , I like the setup for v8 power steering pump that is on my 67 camaro it bolt's up to the motor and the manifold ,

Re: Has anyone swapped power steering into thier 67 2WD?

Original 67 power steering setups are rare but out there. They changed styles in 69 (or so) to the more common that you see in the junkyards... 2WD box and 4WD are totally different, Your 67 has a flat frame so you need to add spacer or a kit like this below (i'm adding it to my 68 K-10). What's your engine? 250 pump brackets are out there, 292 are very hard to find and SBC's are a dime a dozen...

Good luck and welcome..

THis pic was on a 66 but it's the same issue and the same fix...

thats a nice looking bracket kit , where did it come from ?
some simple spacer's will do the same thing but I like the look's of that bracket and the backing plate on the backside of the frame , cool part !

I'd also like to know where the bracket comes from. Looks like the key to my 67 project

Re: Has anyone swapped power steering into thier 67 2WD?

I've read here on the forum that the early '67s were flat framed, but the later ones (toward the end of the '67 model year) had the dimpled area. If you're lucky enough to have the dimpled frame a gear box from a later year will swap right on there. Otherwise you'll have to space it out away from the frame a little.

There's been a lot of pumps and mounting brackets used on smallblocks over the years, most all of which can be made to work depending on the rest of your accessory drive. Pumps clear up to the late '70's all have the flare fitting, and pumps well into the '90s can be made to work by switching the pressure valve (GM went to a bubble flare style connection in about 1980 or so).

There are variable ratio and quick ratio gear boxes. Guys here on the forum complain about the quick ratio boxes being "too twitchy" at highway speeds, although some people like them. Probably a matter of taste or preference. I put a new box on my truck but haven't driven it yet. Even after some extensive archive searching I could never quite determine when the variable ratio and quick ratio boxes started and stopped in the model years. I shot for a variable ratio and got one for a '75 truck. When I get my truck going I hope I find out I hit the right year range.
