Gm still has a lot of NOS parts in warehouses..

http://www.gmpartsdirect.com

I found fan shrouds for FAR less than some vendors. There appear to be some deals to be found for odds and ends, still!

Thanks, that was it. I was hoping they had the radiator hoses, but no luck.

shrouds for $60 is hilarious compared to some aftermarket prices. I was hoping some sidemarkers would be cheaper, no luck tho.

Yeah, if I recall correctly some folks here have been burned on there shipping prices. It might be in the 'review' section from a year or two ago.

Yep, that is them. GMPartsdirect is also known as Flow Chevrolet based out of Winston-Salem, NC. They basically sell parts at cost or a small percentage over then mark up the freight a couple hundred percent. Their gmpartsdirect website is only good to identify part numbers and to identify dealer cost then take that price as ammunition to negotiate with your local GM dealer. Even if you have to pay more at a local GM dealer you are still a head by not paying out the nose for Flow's freight costs. I am not saying they shouldn't make a profit selling GM parts, I just don’t agree with their strategy. I bought from Flow once…..ONCE!

Re: Gm still has a lot of NOS parts in warehouses..

This is from the FAQ section of the web site, also I put a couple items in my shopping cart, went to check out & it looks like S&H is about 19% of the item.

"Why does shipping and handling fee seem so high?

Gmpartsdirect.com sells parts near published dealer cost plus a percentage for a shipping and handling fee. This fee is not actual shipping charges only.

The shipping and handling pays for the shipping charges plus our other expenses like web programming, employees, etc. Another way to explain this is, we are selling you the part near published dealer cost, the shipping, and handling pays all of our expenses associated with running the web site. The amount left over after our expense is our profit.

Keep in mind our overall price is a tremendous savings over retail price and in most cases is even cheaper than dealer wholesale shipped to your door step, and without leaving the convenience of the Mouse. Compare the overall price delivered to your door.

(In some cases our site may misprice parts. If you feel the pricing is incorrect please email us and we will glady check on the part number in question)"

Re: Gm still has a lot of NOS parts in warehouses..

Interesting... I bought quite a few parts from Flow 16 years ago when fixing up my truck. They were great to work with (gentleman named Lee Davis was especially helpful), and at that time the shipping was no worse than anywhere else.
Sad to hear that has changed.

Re: Gm still has a lot of NOS parts in warehouses..

Freight on anything, since fuel cost have risen, is more than it used to be. It doesn't matter who you are and how much you ship. Summit racing advertises "free shipping". The last parts I bought from them had a Handling Fee as part of the costs. Okay, I'll pay it. Shipping was free. Nobody in their right "business mind" is going to do stuff for free and stay in business....for long. Their suppliers ding them for freight and they get it from us. Doesn't matter if you're buying groceries or car parts. The selling prices will include the incidental costs associated with doing business.

I agree that having parts numbers is good when you visit a dealer. It saves them the time of looking it up, especially if you happen to get a young parts person who doesn't share your and my passion for old vehicles. Most every dealership is into serving the public who buy late model stuff. By that, I mean something made within the last 10 years.....which is as long as the federal government says the manufacturers have to maintain replacement parts for out-of-production vehicles.

I don`t consider a part with a bar code to be N.O.S.They didn`t have them until later. The newer stuff is the same as other repro if it`s GM Restoration Parts. That stuff came out after parts were long depleted.

Re: Gm still has a lot of NOS parts in warehouses..

I agree with the above about NOS parts. Now their are what the industry calls
ROE parts. They are recovered original equip parts. GM , FORD , and others have actually sold off most all of the stuff to another company that sells them back to dealers. We have the ability to check the inventory just like any GM parts house can. All we need is a part number and we can see if its still available. I've seen some quantities as low as 5 and some in the 1000's

Re: Gm still has a lot of NOS parts in warehouses..

If GM had half a brain, they would have NEVER stopped making parts for our trucks to begin with. Just look at the market and demand for NOS stuff....maybe if someone in marketing had some foresight they wouldn't be on the verge of ruin today.

Back when I was ordering my stuff from Flow, they had both NOS and repro... advertised & priced accordingly.
