I know you guys probably hate this, but I NEED to put a newer stepside on my truck. Why? I already have one from a wreck (95 step) and my 67's original stepside looks like a big corn flake of RUST. There is nothing left of it, in fact the fenders came seperate than the truck because they rotted off. Plus, the ones Ive seen actually look good, IMHO.

So, who has done the newer bed conversion, and how straight-forward is it?

My son and I found it very straight forward when we put a '96 step-side bed on my '67. It took some square tubing for spacers and some time to align it and bolt it on.

The '96 step-side is temporary for now until next year when we will put the 68 step-side bed on it I bought not too long ago. I am gathering the parts for the frame-off restoration we hope to start next year.

This year I am in the midst of remodeling a room in our house and adding on another room so my '67 will have to wait until next spring I am afraid.

It is not pretty, but here is what it looks like now.

Personally, I like the looks. Seems to flow real well with our old trucks.

I'm of the type to try to keep them as stock looking as possible, but only if you can. I wouldn't hesitate to improvise if it allowed me to drive and use the truck.

Just be sure to make the rear wheel opening round, just like the front.

Here is a board member's truck. I'm not a fan of the new beds but his looks really good. I was considering it for a while on my 67 when I was having so much trouble finding a good bed. So... I would say, if you can get it lined up like this one, go for it. This truck looks sweet!

I don`t mind these beds in a pinch.They have their place in keeping these oldies goin`.I wouldn`t put one on for looks.I like how the General done it the first time.

I have to say that Mike Nutt pulled it off better than any other I've seen. He shortened the rear overhang and eliminated the rear steps.

When I posted the McPherson truck, my reason was to show matching wheel openings. We have grown up with the rounded style on these trucks, and aesthetics in design begs for the openings to be the same on the front and the back. Whichever one you like, is your decision.

If you have never seen the yellow truck of Joel McPherson, it was featured in two consecutive issues of one of the truck mags several years ago. The attention to detail, at that time, was way over the top. Then, after it was finished (in SF), he drove it to Florida.

As for your truck, you do what you like. I like that the body lines on those 88-98 stepside beds line up with the lines on the '67-72. As for me, my early truck is a fleetside, and my '88-98 is a stepside. So, I feel akin to both.
