I installed a power brake set up from a later 80s chevy on a '83 cab. This new one has the plastic fluid resivour. The brakes don't work as well as they should. If I push the peddle I can hear air or vaccumme leeking, and also when I push the peddle idle speeds up a 1 or 2 hundred rpm. After engine has ran I pull the vaccume line out of the thing on the firewall and there is no vaccume left there, it does have the one way valve inline. It appears that the thing on the firewall comes apart. Seems a person just has to tap the tabs about a inch counterclock wise and it should come apart. I would just replace, but its already got a nice coat of paint on it. Are these spring loaded or will any parts fly out? Rebuild kits available anywhere or gotta install used parts? Thanks.

make sure you dont have the cruise control vacuum line knocked off the switch on the brake pedal arm...

i would not try to open the vacuum booster, they are fairly cheap at your local parts store

There is no cruise or cruise switches on vehicle. Idle definatly increases when I push brakes, I'm thinking its sending air back through the vaccume line into the intake making a lean condition which would make it idle speed up. If I hold my foot on brake its a steady air leek, not just a burst and its done.

Someone here's curiousity has gotten to get the best of them and have taken one apart.

I painted it with urethane enamel and have since ran out, which is why I don't want to buy a new one that has dull cheap paint on it.

I believe there is a high tension spring inside, and can be dangerous if you don't use the proper tools to disassemble

Maybe someone with a manual can see if they tell you to not ever take it apart with out special tools?

Tailgate is painted, just needs a little fixing in areas and clear coat.

I have rebuilt the boosters when I was a GM mechinic. There isn't much to it really and the spring inside isn't all that strong, but for the first timer it isn't worth the effort and parts aren't easily aquired any more. The rebuilts from NAPA are good and aren't expensive. jim

Almost 2 years of work, but it was really worth the effort. Little stuff left to do is mount winch, wet sand & buff out and build belly pan\running boards. Body work takes lots and LOTS of beer!!!! God, Guts and Guns made America and God, Guts and Guns will preserve it! The worst thing you could do is get into my sights, but that don't matter, you'll never know it, cause you'll never hear the shotJim or Paladin whichever you choose.
