speedo cable question

I had 3 on tree shifter, but moved it to floor, now my shifter linkage interferes with the speedo cable, so every time I hook it up, the speedo works for a while, but then gets eaten through and won't work anymore....what can I do to get the speedo hooked up, but without interfering with the linkage?
