What Motor would you run??

Loooking to find out what motor you would run my truck

It is a low budget primer black rat rod. 20's front and back. 12bolt rear with posi. Will end up with a 700r4. It currently has a solid 350. Looking for 400 or more hp. I like the zz350 crate and the zz383 for price and power. Although a 572 would be fun. Remember to keep price in mind and please explain your choice.

Rat rod, bang for the buck? Another 383 vote. Take the engine thats in the truck now find a crank build the engine with your block, save more money and use the accesories, transmission you allready have.

454.....it's so easy to make super nice power with a BBC. You don't have to put your foot through the firewall to get er to move. 383's are nice but a stroker motor adds $$$. I like tons of low end torque at low RPM's which is where you drive on the street.

Re: What Motor would you run??

You didn't mention your budget, but the ZZ motors are easily in the $4k range.

If you truly think your 350 is a "solid" foundation, just throw a little 142 blower on it and ideally install a blower grind cam. You will have well over 400 hp and used ones are always on Ebay for about 1/2 price of new. Ideally your 350 should have forged pistons, but cast will be fine if your tune is on.

Only drawback is a stock type 700 won't hold up long behind it....nor will it live long behind 400 hp if hammered on.

I've always wanted a 383. But if your motor is solid how about stroking it? Or maybe new cam/heads?

But the zz383 crate is decent power with a good low end.

Rat rod = Primer black. It probably is not a real rat rod with 20's, a complete front end replacemnet and air bags and power brakes but it does ahve and always will have swiss cheese in certain parts of the body.

Re: What Motor would you run??

I like the 383 for 400 HP but you really want to build for torque if it's a street engine.Torque moves you and HP makes you quick. If you really want 400 HP you can get it with a mildly built 400 SBC or if you want interesting stroke a 400.

Re: What Motor would you run??

Best bang for the buck on a GM crate motor is the Fast Burn 385

Re: What Motor would you run??

If this is not a daily driver then I'd go big, 400sbc or 454. Your not going to be able to run regular gas with any of the zz motors. Have you looked at any of the 3rd party crate motors? Save the money for pretty chrome things under than dull rat rod hood.

Re: What Motor would you run??

I don’t run electric trucks. All my trucks have gasoline engines.

Motors are electric while engines run on fuel!

Sorry, I just had to say that…. Calling an engine a “Motor” is a major pet peeve of mine.

Re: What Motor would you run??

Just razzing. We don’t hear of an electric engine other than an internet search engines….right? You’re right though, no need to get caught up on incorrect terminology. The motor vs. engine debate has been going on for years and it all started with the electric automobile referred to as the motor car, then motor cycle, etc. I had a college professor that would blow a gasket anytime someone referred to a fuel powered engine as a motor. I work for a truck and engine manufacturer and our engineering staff is the same way. In respect of SAE, we don’t print documents, manuals, or anything in relation to our engines as motors although SAE does use the term motor rather loosely themselves. The folks that refer to engines as motors are all wrong but it is okay…..nobody is taking points off being we are not in the classroom.
