Re: Kickdown Switch????

This is what the site says.......That it goes just above the gas pedal.....
The 400 transmissions have an electric passing gear switch (kick down switch). This switch is located just above the gas pedal. The transmission will never work correctly without this switch. This switch will fit your car or truck if your make and model was available with a 400 transmission.
http://www.transmissioncenter.net/35...erformance.htm

This is going on a 66 C10 w/ 94 350 and th400

Dosn't seem like that is really what i need. I am looking for the switch that goes on the carb linkage like this.....The push botton thing...

Re: Kickdown Switch????

Here is what the switch looks like attached to the pedal, hopefully it will help in your search. This one pictured was off a 71 bbc/th400 truck, the 72 pedal setup is of the same function/design but has a slightly different look as the swich is surrounded by metal.

Re: Kickdown Switch????

I see Classic Bowties.

This is going to go on a 66 which never had a 400. So, it probably dosn't have a place for it... or dose it?

What about this switch?

What car/truck had this and what do i call it when i go to the parts store?

The first pictured switch that you asked for is the 71/72 throttle cable only type pedal mounted switch, if trying to use on a 66 with a throttle linkage, try and locate the carb mounted-V/8 or intake mounted-V/6 kickdown switch.

That is the hard part....finding it..... I didn't know how the first switch mounted/worked. I thought it was for under the hood. I see now from your pics that it goes on the pedal.

Does anyone know what car/truck this switch would come from?

I have been looking at the AutoZone web site and can't find it. I work at AZ and hope to have better luck tonight while I am there. (The web site sucks.. you have to be very specific with the part name besides knowing what car it came on.)

Re: Kickdown Switch????

Try looking it up for most any fullsize '68 and older that had a TH400, including pickups. I know that '65 & '66 impalas and Caprices had them as well as '66-'68 pickups. Of course that probably won't get you the mounting bracket for it.

Re: Kickdown Switch????

To me it looks like a simple two wire contact switch, the kind that you have to hold in to energize for the tranny to kick down to a lower gear. I would assume that any switch that does the same thing will work, if you aren’t’ worried about it being original.

Well, we were thinking of that too. Might just have to do that. Trying to do it on the cheap.

But would still like to know exactly what car/truck we could get it from.

Re: Kickdown Switch????

Should be able to get one from a truck stop, checker, autozone, ect. just tell them you want a push-in switch.

Re: Kickdown Switch????

Here is a thread where someone fabbed a bracket, then used a universal momentary contact switch. Looks pretty tidy. I thought about doing that myself since those pedal mounted switches are kinda hard to find.

If you end up using a pedal mounted switch I'd think any good transmission supply in your metro area should be able to fix you up.

It would be the trans kick down switch......isn't that what you are looking for?

BTW the kick down switch doesn't affect any operation of the transmission other than down shifting when you mash the skinny pedal. So if you don't have one it isn't going to ruin your trans. You'll just have to manually downshift when you need to.

That is what I was calling it. Couldn't find it using the caprice. AZ dosn't cary it. Oh well. We like that setup that Lugnut showed us. Probably do something like that. Oh and I know it won't hurt the trany to not have the kickdown on it. Just would be nice if it did kickdown without doing it manualy.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Re: Kickdown Switch????

I have a T400 in my truck and have a kick down switch made by B&M. I don't have it hooked up yet,but I was wondering how long will the trans stay in passing gear if you don't let off the gas. Does the switch hold it in second until you let off or does it have some sort of automatic shift at certain rpm. Not trying to steal the thread and thanks in advance.

Re: Kickdown Switch????

A Turbo 400 will downshift from 3rd to 2nd without the switch with no problem. It's the wide open throttle / 3rd to 1st downshift that the switch makes happen. If you install a switch, you want to adjust it so it doesn't actuate until close to WOT.

You could drive a TH400 forever without a downshift switch without damaging it in any way. You just wouldn't have the 3-1 downshift.

Re: Kickdown Switch????

So the kick down takes the trans from 3rd to 1st when activated. So does the trans shift back up thru the gears after the down shift? How long does it stay in 1st if I don't let off WOT?
