Truck prices

I was talking to a friend of mine today. He is a wholesaler in the car biz he was buying a 02 GMC Envoy from me. we got to talking about old trucks, he asked what my plans for my 70 were. After I told him some of my plans he said " you'll never get your money back, those trucks are not bringing anything". He went on to say that in the last two weeks he has seen three of the 67-72 type trucks run at two different sales. the first was a 70 swb 350-350 decent paint little rust 1300 was high. the next was a 69 lwb fresh paint 2000 was high bid. the last was a 72 swb cheyenne it was nice he said. 4000 was the top bid. Two of the three sold but he didn't say witch one didn't. What is the deal with truck prices ,I know time are hard but c'mon. Maybe I should wait a couple of months to see whats gonna happen before I move on with mine. It is NOT a keeper. Jim

don't go by his word. You have the internet... do your own research.
He may be looking at 3/4 ton stuff that doesn't bring in good money.

Re: Truck prices

I agree with him....there are so many trucks for sale (at least her in AZ) right now for cheap prices it's crazy.....Craiglist is loaded with $500 to $3,500 trucks here, with a lot of them being very rust free!

Restoring classics has never really been a big money maker....unless it's "special" vehicle of some sorts....as it takes virtually the same amount of of time, effort and money to restore either of them!

Also, It's just not the Chevy truck market that is down....it's ALL classic cars right now....actually a great time to buy if you have extra cash laying around!

just wait for that fast and furious movie to come out... Make the prices explode then trickle down...

this all depends on how its portrayed of course.

Talking Re: Truck prices

I can not understand these truck's as far as price , they confuse the hell out of me , I have fooled with camaro's and chevelles for as long as I have the truck's and can put a value on any of the three year's of camaro's and get you within a few hundred dollar's of what it will sell for ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
but these truck's make no sense !! I will see a truck for sale and think to myself THATS A $1500.00 dollar truck ,,,,,,,,and then find out it sold for $5000.00 !!!!!!!!! and in reverse order I have seen truck's I thought were worth good money sold for peanut's !! heck right now someone has a 67 in the classifieds on this page that look's like what I spent my adult life trying to find and he's selling part's off it !!!!!!!!!
I am glad I am not into buying and selling 67 to 72 truck's , I will admit I have made some good money buying and selling camaro's and chevelle's , I don't plan to do that anymore , for me now it's my hobby , just mt 2c's

Re: Truck prices

I wasn't planning on trying to sell him my truck. He is just was talking about that body style. He use to have a 72 super. He always has had somthing fun or fast. We use to be best of friends and travaled all over the country with our racecars. Ha used to have some super fat drag cars and trucks. He had some cars that would run in the 4.50's in the eighth mile. I quit racing to spend more time at home and with the kids and we don't hang anymore, but he still buys some stuff from me. Jim

Re: Truck prices

older trucks just don't bring the same money (generally) as older cars do.

Re: Truck prices

I've wanted a 69 short box 4x4 my entire life. never found one I could afford. Driving through Washington a month or so ago I saw the sweetest 67 4x4. Went over to take a peek and by golly it was for sale. price in the window was $3800. Thought about it the whole way to Seattle and back. It was still in the parking lot. Even better than I remembered. I called the guy and told him I would buy it if he could wait a week. He did it is now mine. I paid full asking price because it was worth more than that to me. The market goes up, The market goes down. Buy low, sell high. You would have to offer a whole lot of money to get me to give this one up. When people have the extra money and security that they can get more, They will pay more for what they want. Now is not that time. Good time to be a buyer. I think these trucks will always bring good money....Sometimes you just gotta wait longer. just my .02

Re: Truck prices

I'm doing up my 72 the way I want within what my budget allows. If I was planning on selling it I don't think I would do anything to it. Most people I know think I'm crazy for paying $2500 for my truck but I think it was worth it. I'm not going to put bundles of cash into it but will build it the way I like it and if I had to sell I would probably get most if not all money back. For us hobby guys it's suppose to be about the fun, the social aspect of it all. I've met a bunch of great people and the common thread was we all have or had one of these trucks. If you're doing it for the money, it's a business. These trucks are classic and will always have some value, unlike that $2500 Sprint that loses value with every mile you put on it.

He's a wholesaler. They look for trucks/cars that can be bought cheap and sold easily. Newer trucks & cars can generally be made ready to sell with little money and they are easier to finance for people (plus they can offer warranty easier too).

With old cars/trucks who knows what it will need and could be a headache for a cars salesman.

It's kind of like old furniture, the new stuff is junk but that's what people are buying. The old stuff is made better and is more solid. Some is worth allot of money, but unless you are in the business of buying & selling old furniture it's just old stuff. Most people couldn't tell you what is valuable and what isn't doesn't mean it's not worth as much.

There are 3 `67-`68 Chevelle's SS's sitting in the woods on the side of a mountain. I can see them with binoculars from my house and have hiked there to see them. After looking into fixing them up. (ordered catalogs, joined forums etc.) I wouldn't be able to sell them for anything close to what it would take to make them nice. Mainly because they wouldn't have matching numbers.
The parts seemed allot higher too, there is more than twice the interior work to be done also.
For the most part trucks will always sell, and most people don't care about matching numbers or what you do to them.
For the best bang for the buck, trucks are the best value.

Re: Truck prices

If he's talking about "dealer auctions" EVERYTHING goes cheap there... for the most part. Dealers typically pay 2-5K less than what they plan on selling the vehicle for. A friend of a friend helped two different guys at work buy Tahoes back when prices were strong and each paid 4-5K less for their 'hoes than they would have off a used dealer lot. Those same trucks would probably be put on a lot and turned around for 5K.

Re: Truck prices

It takes so much time, effort, knowledge to build these old buckets to be fairly nice that at the end you are lucky if you even break even. Now if you fix up a driver, clean it up cheaply you can make a nice profit.

Build it and drive it, and you won't need to worry about it.

Re: Truck prices

The prices of everything is down....and yes...the prices on our trucks have dropped quite a bit also. Not a lot of anything is selling. As far as re-sale......I have always made a habbit of not spending more on them than I can get out of them....but If you are going to keep it for life or dont mind loosing money...spend what it takes to get it where you want it.
