Re: master cylinder leaks

Mine does as well on my '68 and just this past weekend I took the top off and took one of those (nail driver countersinking thingamabobs) and just hammered on the bottom side of the lid to push it up more and make the lid tighter. The holdowns on mine seemed kinda loose anyway, but not after I did this. I haven't driven it yet to know if it helped, but perhaps you can do this and let us know?

Re: master cylinder leaks

Is this a CPP master cylinder?
The best you can do is bend the wire clips to add additional pressure down on the cover for a tighter seal. Good luck.

I agree. I had the same problem and a new gasket fixed it. Hope it's a simple fix.

Re: master cylinder leaks

Kragen or Napa has them in stock. Just take your cap in with you to make sure. I think they're like 5 bucks is all.
That will definitely be your fix.

Re: master cylinder leaks

Mine was slightly bent so that even after buying and replacing the rubber it still leaked. So...I bought a new chrome cover somewhere that came with the rubber and the hold down bail, and slapped it on. No leaks since.

It almost sounds like you're expecting every previous owner of your truck had a clue as to what they were doing? You'd be amazed what some people patch together...even on brakes! If you haven't already, I'd do a pretty in depth study of all the brakes if you're going to drive it like this (but first get the m/c cap and/or gasket). Check rotors/pads/calipers/lines/hoses/ebrake/drums/shoes/springs. It sucks to be on the side of the road, but it sucks a lot worse to think your brakes are ok and sometime REALLY need them (and they not work!).

Re: master cylinder leaks

On mine, I was getting leaking out of the filler cap area and a new black gasket didn't fix it. I had some make your own gasket, it was a rubber sheet that was just a little thicker than the OEM gasket. I cut out only what I needed and added it. My leak went away. This sheet of gasket is just like the stuff you buy for your water hose for outside, the orange ring gaskets already made, but in a sheet just like a piece of paper. I bought it at Home Depot. Good luck on your fix.

Re: master cylinder leaks

I'm glad to see that I am not the only one dealing with this problem. I am going to bend the master cylinder bale wire and see if it takes the little bit of seepage that I'm getting. If not, then maybe a new gasket.

Re: master cylinder leaks

Watch which gasket material you use. Some are not compatable with brake fluid. If you have a gasket and a leak I would sugest first replacing the gasket with a new one, making sure the flange is flat, then if it still leaks bend the bail to make the cap tighter.
