engine question

Ok...I think i'm kinda leaning toward building the inline, however i'm still having some trouble figuring out which head I need to get...if someone has pictures or can point me to an ebay auction, etc of one, that would be awesome...second, before I can do any of that, I need to figure out what's going on with my engine...I'm about to take it in to get looked at, but it would be nice to get some ideas here...it runs fine, idles fine, it just makes a loud clacking noise and smokes...what could this be??

Also, will a TH350 bolt up to my engine without any modifications?

Thanks guys

Re: engine question

A TH350 bolts up assuming your flex plate has holes that match the torque converter. If you did not have a TH350 or 700R4 you will need to rig a kickdown cable.

Look about 3-4 pages down for a thread 'where are all the 6 bangers?' started by Manimal. On Page 2 there are some good shots of non-integral head engines, basically showing where the intake can be unbolted from the head.

http://www.inliners.org/tech/heads/headindex.htm has a partial list of head castings. Avoid the nova siamesed exhaust ports, and watch your compression ratio.

Occasionally heads show up on ebay but shipping will kill you. I find an l6 a month on craigslist.

Re: engine question

use the search (chev*, GMC) (250, 230, 292) for a starter, then look at what you don't like and add - strings.

And that is a V8 head.

Re: engine question

Go to your local wrecking yards and look for a head froma 194. A 230/250/292 head will also work. A 194 will raise your compression ratio, but shrouds the valves. Are you building a 250? 292?....more info please.

Re: engine question

for the 250 you can use 307 flat top pistons(cast are fine). Take a look at webrodder.com There is someone on there makes cams just for the inline 6's. Good Luck.
