ok someone said maybe my centrifical advance stops arnt working, damaged , i dont remember. what do these look like , do i need to make some, what. i dont remeber ever ever seeing any stops on the distributerb of any of them that i have ever worked on

Jeff,

you don't have any centrifugal advance stops. Everything is built into the weights. All you have is the pins the weights sit on. If the pins are worn, or the hole in the weights are ovaled out, then the timing will be irratic and maybe have a tad too much advance. This was what happened to my old distributor. Stock GM HEI's are supposed to have 20 degrees of advance at the crank and it had close to 22. Worn weights was the cause.

But I don't think this could be so bad to where it would cause spark knock the way yours is doing it. It's a fact, something is not right with yours. If I remember correctly, you have always had this trouble since you swapped out distributors, right? Have you checked the balancer yet?

you have a good memory Mike, i have had it all the time. unless i put the springs on that i got from MOROSO awhile back, but i think they made a mistake and sent me HOOD SPRINGS

just kidding but they didnt allow to advance enough. anyways, i am going to see if i can locate a timing tape, and mess with it on monday. i had another family emergency this weekend
