Question Dirty Gas Tank Question

I have a 67 C20 and its been running a little rough. I decided to adjust the carb and change the fuel filter...well the fuel filter had so much dirt (which I think is rust from the tank) in it that I was surprised the carb even got fuel. I noticed the PO put a new fuel pump on it and was wondering is there any way to clean out the gas tank? Will all that dirt mess up my fuel pump? or should I just keep changing fuel filters until it cleans itself out? Any help would be great.

Re: Dirty Gas Tank Question

Last summer I took mine out removed the sending unit and cleaned it with water pressure. I mainly wanted to get rid of loose rust scale and some junk on the bottom. I drained it and let it sit out in the sun to dry.

I then installed a filter before the fuel pump. (I'm posting a question regarding the last fuel filter change a month ago.)

Re: Dirty Gas Tank Question

Ijust treated my with the KBS coating tank sealer kit; $67 to my door. step 1: cleaner;degreaser and I threw some chain link in while sloshing around 2. metal ech rust converted 3. sealer.

Very happy with results and the cost versus a new tank

This is probably what I should have done in the first place. The tank I cleaned was, in fact, one I had bought new years before. I let it sit for about 5 years. They come untreated and will rust out if not used -at least mine did.

Re: Dirty Gas Tank Question

i should add the kit is good for up to a 21 gallon tank, and the sealer requires 4 DAYS to completely cure (ie no gas) and each step requires teh tank be completely dry (after having rinsed thoroughly with water). So, it's not a weekend fix.

Re: Dirty Gas Tank Question

POR 15 also sells a kit that will seal up and restore your gas tank.
