honest opinions needed

Considering purchasing these wheels/tires for my '77 swb 2wd. Centerline, alum 17x8 and 17x10, 65% tread left on V-rated tires, seller is asking $600.

The 77 needs new shoes (can't stand the wagon wheels), and I might be able to talk the seller down. Would 17's in this size look stupid on a stupid slow 77 with an inline? A suspension drop is in the works (planning stages).

Lets hear what you have to say, you won't hurt my feelings.

Re: honest opinions needed

I'd say if you can get them for $500 go for it, I hate wagon wheels and those centerlines are pretty decent looking. I seem to have different taste then most board member though

17" look great if tires have enough meat on them. Costs is my factor.
Engine size don't matter. Go for looks!!

If you like them and can get them for under $600 and they have good tires. I say go for it. See if he will let you mount 2 of them on there to get an idea.

Re: honest opinions needed

Honest opinion,... I'd run 7" and 8" ralleys before I'd run those wheels. To me they are dated.
Also,... no wheels cheaper than ralleys. Just my 2 cents.

I like those, but.

Stance, Wheels, and Color must all work together JMO.

What type of daily weather conditions will those aluminum wheels be subject to?

There not as dated as the wagon wheels!!!!!!!

Jeff i say go for it i think they will work well with the color of the truck cuz chrome or polished aluminum go's with any color & yeah those wheels are a bit dated but hey the trucks 31 yo so to me its not a big issue as the price is beat the guy down on that and i think you will be happy with them.

Re: honest opinions needed

Thanks for the feedback everyone, much appreciated!

A little more history and background...

The truck will eventually be a light blue, with white roof...and lowered 3/4. It will see spring/summer/fall only...no winters or snow/salt. I am trying to keep this as low buck as possible. The current tires are near the end of their life, so new ones are in store soon. I have a set of 15x8 Rallys (which I do like), but they need sandblasting and powdercoat/paint..and obviously tires.

I am going to contact the seller and see what the backspacing is, confirm bolt pattern (he says they will look good on a truck, but did not provide BP), and talk price.

I am torn between these, or refurbishing my Ralls and buying tires...should be about the same price no matter what way I go.

Re: honest opinions needed

Get your Ralleys sandblasted, it cost me $15 each to just do the face of mine
then I got etch primer, Argent silver, and clear cote from Eastwood and did them my selfName: My 79.jpg

They came out great, got some repro centers from ebay, and some cooper cobra tires, 245/60/15-front (got for free) and 275/60/15 out back!
Unlike those Centerlines, Ralleys will never get outdated, IMO!

+1 vote for refurbishing the ralleys......timeless look, less maintenance.

Re: honest opinions needed

I say find a set of slotted old school wheels, if you aren't sure about refurbishing the ralleys. They might be dated, but they are dated at the same time frame as your truck, so it kind of works. If you are leaning towards the rallys, I wouldn't be as concerned about blasting the them, as long as they are scuffed OK, the paint should stick just fine. A set of BFG Radial T/A's, and it would look pretty clean with the colors you are looking to go with. I don't think I would purchase the centerlines unless they were insanely cheap.

Re: honest opinions needed

Those wheels don't look too bad. And 17"s are 17"s. But rallies would be cheaper with brand new tires and they are timeless. You know I am a fan. After all the trouble I have been through though, I think 7"s and 8" are the ticket.

Re: honest opinions needed

Either way I totally dig the truck and definately think a straight six with a great stance is better that one without a great stance. I would do it.

Re: honest opinions needed

Those particular 17s would be my last choice of your three.

In my opinion:

1.) quickie refurb your rallys and buy suitable tires
2.) paint the wagon wheel centers a darker color, keep the machined lips, and buy suitable tires
3.) get the mid-90s era 17s

I'd rather look dated to the 70s or 80s than the mid 90s cheesy billet directionals. I don't think you can look dated on rallys, but they are pretty stock looking (for lack of a better word)

Man jeff i guess iv'e been under a rock.I didn't even know you had that truck.Cool.Now for those wheel's,i also think they look dated. But,better than what's on there.i like the 17 plan.If your not in a big hurry, hold out for some torque thrust's.If you do rallie's try to find some old deep vette one's.Just my opinion.

I agree I'd hold out on these, and also like the vette rallie idea.
