Power steering question

I'm new to the 4 X 4 scene so bear with me, . I'm looking a buying a 1968 4 X 4 suburban. It currently doesn't have power steering, but I think I would like to add it if I purchase it. It has the "old style" knuckle (??) front end. How difficult will this be? What about a disc brake conversion? Should I just get another front axle? Any help would be appreciated.

Rob,
I don't know much about the 68 4x4's, but I would just swap the axle for one with disk brakes. I also think you need an adapter that goes on the frame for the power steering---someone correct me if I'm wrong.

the 68 front end should be a closed knuckle dana 44. your best bet would be to swap to a open knuckle front from a 71-72 because it'll have disks. also a corp 10 will fit but i don't know what is involved with that. as for the power steering you'll need an adapter plate as said above

Here is one that we use, as well as a complete kit...these are specific to the '60-'66, so I don't know for sure about the '67-'72, but hopefully this will get you headed in the right direction. www.carsteering.com is a good source for parts for a power steering conversion, as well as, you favorite local auto parts store (FLAPS).

check out the last couple of pages of my build thread... new axle is better, (any chevy solid axle will bolt right in, I ran a 1982 10bolt) if it has the flat frame like mine then you need the conversion bracket...

all you have to do is find a good lil donor truck with everything on it..
my 68 has a corp 10 of an 87 burb as well as the whole powerstering set up... an everything works pretty well

not to be rude... but you would be crazy to actually swap a 10 bolt in right... i have broke 3 of those and pounded on 44's with 35" tires...

i know the brakes are nice and power steering setup but i wheel my ride and i hate 10 bolts...

why not a 44 out of a later model.... i realize 60's are expensive...

I must be crazy then too... of course I take care of my trucks and don't attempt to do things that they aren't made for... (ie 35" tires off-road with a 1/2 ton axle)

Rob, I have a link at home for a setup like that.. They were selling it for about $350-$400 for the complete kit at Carlisle... I'll PM that this weekend...

sorry... was sharing some experience and believe i worded my reply as a question, as not to be rude...

this is the 4x4 section, not the comfort section, so i was trying to give a little advise based on 4x4'ing... cost's money to switch to these parts and i bet you could find a 44 almost just as easy... not tons better, but better...

10 bolts have very weak axles... even the aftermarket ones don't hold up very well....

if your just gonna drive your truck on road then i guess a 10 bolt will do great...

msgross... your just jealous i have a 3/4 ton.... lol jk....
