speedo quit working

For the last week or so I kept hearing a timed clicking sound like something was skipping in the same place. At first I thought it was the brake pad warning tab but then it sounded like it was coming from behind the dash. Well today I was driving to work and noticed a CHP behind me so I look down to make sure I wasn`t speeding and I noticed it wasn`t working. And the noise is gone. The PO said he had changed the speedo at some point so I`m guessing either the speedo went out again or it`s the cable. How often do these speedo`s quit working? Is there a quick way to determine which one is bad, the cable ot the gauge?

Re: speedo quit working

sounds like the speedo head is bad... just take the cable the tranny and have someone watch the speedo needle to see if it moves when you turn the cable. thats how i checked mine. good luck

Re: speedo quit working

the cable needs to be lubed when you hear it whirring like that... silicone spray usually works.. it could be a bad head tho gotta take it apart and see

Re: speedo quit working

Does the truck have cruise? My cruise box on the driver's side inner fender went bad, I replaced it with a one piece cable and all was fine.

No cruise but I`ll do the cable check. How hard is it to replace the speedo head if thats the problem? I`ve never had the dash apart on one of these trucks.
