bear claw question

I will be installing bear claw latches from autoloc in my 1950 I also bought the install kit. my doors are currently empty with no glass chanels in place. I have seen a few installs where they spaced the latches out about a 1/4 inch from the door. is this necessary to clear the glass chanel runs? I am going with power windows and shaved outer handles.

The extra space prevents the latch from binding against the window channel. A .25 seems like alot but would work fine. My choice was to keep the handles. I talked with several owners who had shaved theirs and some were happy and some were not.

The option is to put the bearclaws on the doorpost and the latching bolt on the door. Seen quite a few who did that. Of course you can't keep handles that way

Take a look at my install of the small bear claw latches in my 53. Will be using the orginal door handles inside and out as I like chrome and the handle will accent the door as well. This is a real clean install along with the ability to remove the latch if needed for future repair, this install is for the push button type latches not the 90 degree crank as on early models. Also I intend on keeping the vent window as well more chrome as well as the chrome outer ring around the outside window edge. Will have the rest of the install posted on monday finished the drivers door late last night, have had the passenger side done for awhile and is sweet. Will also post the regulator handle on the inside of the door, will use the stock regulator and cut a slit in the door and attach it to the bearclaw latch for the opening from the inside sweet and using the stock stuff timeless jsut my opinion

I had seen that also but cant find the threads where it was done. I am not keeping the handles anyway

nice job on your install with keeping the stock parts. thre is nothing stock on my truck at all, but I can appreciate the stock ones also.

I notched the window channel for clearance. A friend of mine that is a street rod builder had to do the same thing to a truck he built with shaved door handles and power windows. I would also recommend power windows from Nu-relics. They are a direct bolt in and use steel gears not a plastic cable. they are close to $450.00 but worth it.

Now I also decided to complicate things further by going with side windows glass w/out the metal trim. The C channel weather stripping needs to be messed with to get this to work, since the glass with only be 1/4 " in thickness since the metal trim was removed.

got any pics of the notched chanel? I notice the stock latches are out a little from the door also. there is a small hump where they are installed. my latches come in tuesday so I can make measurements then. did you use the nu - relics kit?

No I don't. I think I cut out that hump area when installing mine. I did use the Nu-relics kit. I oredered it w/out switches because I wanted some billet ones. That saves you a little money. They way my builder friend explained that most of those cheaper power window units dont work well for these trucks. They are a pint to adjust. I also had a chance to see the Nu-relic units at a car show, and was impressed with how well they are made.

Also I should mention, if you go with the smaller bear claw latches you will have more room. I did not ralize this and I went with the large ones. There are only (2) sizes.

I also have not installed everything as of yet, so I still have a far amount of work with the C-channel and glass adjustment.

What we need is a more modern "Bear Claw" type latch
that is more of a bolt in
Hope someone invents one soon
