barn door tailgate.

Ok I have seen some trucks with the swing "barn door" tailgate done on them. Any one have an idea on how to do this? What hinge was used? Any help is just that.. help and I am thankful for it.

Re: barn door tailgate.

I have done this before using like Jeep style or Samurai style door hinges. However the best hinge for this would be like a suicide door hinges....totally a custom install, though.

Re: barn door tailgate.

Sorry no pics of that....this was back in the mini truck days of the late 80's early 90's....were there even cameras in those days ??

You know what, now that I think of it....my wife's Honda Element rear door lower hinges would be cool too...two of those to be exact...any Honda wrecking yards near you ?

Suicide hinges and a bearclaw latch with a remote popper would be cool.

Well, I personally wouldn't have a problem unlatching both sides at once but for those that are vertically challenged, well...I'm not so sure.

Re: barn door tailgate.

Man I have seen that seatbelt latch setup used on at least 10-15 trucks here in Bakersfield alone lol. I was actually gonna use it on my '64 before I sold her. I will get back into it in three years after I finish college and have some space for it. This whole working like a ninja hiding from the apartment manager in broad daylight with your wheels and A-arms off and truck on 4 jack stands 200 feet from the managers office when working on vehicles in the parking lot is strictly prohibited is garbage

Re: barn door tailgate.

I dumped 4 quarts of clean oil on some beautiful new cement at an apt complex once.. stuck the drain plug in to stop the flow , and forgot to tighten it, luckily I backed out of the space and saw the problem before I smoked the motor. Screwed up thier pretty cement though.

Back Ot I like the seat belt idea, at first I thought -not strong enough-, but wait the seat belt is probably one of the strongest parts of a vehicle.

Re: barn door tailgate.

The seat-belt idea is a good one. I have seen it done at a local car-show as well.

Then mabey some cables from a #ord gate...

Re: barn door tailgate.

This is off a Jeep website, but the guy converted a Wrangler into a pickup bed. He used some cables.

I think this is around where the tail gate started.

Those are the latches I had installed on my step side bed when I was running it. They are really slick and simple to install...

We did a 67- short-step about 10 years ago that used the GM catch and buckles to hold the gate up. I know the truck got wrecked/rebuilt a few times but the belts held up fine over the years. ( light color got dirty tho)
