54 gmc s10 swap (yes yet another one)

well i've been here for a while looking at others threads. getting ideas and giving some of mine. i decided it was time to start a thread on my truck. so here it is. i started with a 54 gmc 1ton dually no motor and a slightly tweeked frame.then put it on a 85 fullsize 4x4 frame.not my best idea i'll admite but i wanted a big jacked up old truck. why becaues all my friends had one. the i got smart and sold all that jacked up stuff and decided to go the with the s10 swap. which is the way i should have gone in the first place because i would be drivin the balls of my truck right now. well live and learn. my progressis slow but steady so here are lots of pics on the progress so far.

here is the cab on the new frame that wasn't rotted like the other one. some pics of the brake booster and the motor in place.

pics of the trans cross member out of an 89 chevy 1500 4x2 that i made fit. the steering column that is a 68 chevy three on the tree(scored for 20 bucks.) the motor is a 305 and the trans is a turbo 350 that i traded the lift kit off the 85 frame for(the trans was rebuilt with a b&m shift kit not a bad trade came withe a new converter still in the sealed box.).

well thats all the pic i have for now. i am currently working on adapting the s10 wirins harness to work in the gmc cab with the carb 305 since the s10 was efi. dam wires are pissing me off ,but i gona figure it out. hope to have some pics of the wiring within a week or so.

pugs yes the cab is mounted i am using a regular cab 6ft box s10 frame.

sgtusmc thanks i have been following your build too. i know not a lot of gmc's getting a second chance at life. i think they look a lot cooler than the chevys but thats just me!

yea wiring sucks but it reall sucks when you are taking a complete s10 efi wiring harness and making it fit in a 54gmc that has a carb 305,68 c10 steering column. got a whole pile of wire that i cut off the harness, more than i put in the truck. hope it all works when i'm done. i think that 3 years at vo-tech in electromechanical technology is paying off after all.

got the wiring under the hood finished. made my guage bezles today. i think they look pretty good,going to stain them tomorrow. oh also mounted the eletric fan and horns.

atleast your moving in the right direction, Im using a harness out of a 64 chevy for my 57. here's a pic of my gauges when i did my 54

thanks pugs,well it wasn't easy tracing all the wires and getting everything to fit right but it was worth it. i'm trying to use everything i can salvage from my doner s10. the s10 wiring save me a few hundred on a complete wiring kit. your 57 is coming along great. love the dodge dash. i'm trying to get everything mocked up before i tear it down for the finally time it the early spring. thats when the body is getting blasted and finished. my girlfriends father is giving me a some mags wheels and tires for the 54. they are either craigers or keystons. the fronts are 6 inche wides and the backs are 12 inch wide all have very good tires on them. hope to have them soon so i can get a few pics.

well got the guage panels stained and mounted today. i didn't hook the guages up yet still got some more wiring to do. what do you think?

how much room do you have for a steering shaft? if you could please post some pics. i'm about to start my build and would like to see how the steering works . thanks

still working on that. room is really tight their. i will need a suport bearing in it somewhere. if the weather holds out i want to go to the junkyard an go steering shaft hunting. i will keep you posted and if i find something i will let you know what they came out of so you can mimic mine. i'll try to get a pic of how much room i have for you tomorrow.

found some more pics of the truck early on in the build before the s10 swap.one pic with me next to the truck. i'm only 5foot 4 and the truck only had 34's on it not the 36 12.50x 16.5 that i had for it. god i miss ths black an white camera i had.
