Added factory AM/FM Radio - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Just finished putting back a factory AM/FM radio in my dash (thanks Harold!). Yeah, I know it is from a van, but the faceplate and lens are NOS, and it looks perfect. I also added a re-built factory speaker (thanks Mel!) and a new antenna. You can see it is a super tight fit with factory A/C, but it can be done. The location of the antenna plug actually worked out great, as it slid in right over some ductwork. All of the presets work, and have been tuned accordingly

Hi Scott, I am glad to help anytime. I dont know how I missed this thread but anyhow congrats on your conversion, your dash looks great with that am/fm installed. I know harold sells some nice stuff so hopefully that radio's output does that refurbed speaker justice. Mel

Hey Mel- The speaker works great!! Nothing sounds like Zep in FM mono

I will be relocating the customautosound radio I had in the dash, to underneath the seat on the drivers side. My dad did this with his '58, so I have a lot of practice tuning without seeing what I am doing. I moved the gas tank out of the cab, so I am going to build a custom speaker box to house some 10" subs, mids and tweets behind the seats. An amp will go under the drivers side seat. Then I will run a cable from that stereo to my ashtray, where my MP3 player will sit. People will wonder how I am able to shatter their eardrums with what looks like a totally original factory set-up. I love the factory AM/FM, and it plays probably better than it did in 72....but sometimes I like my music LOUD!

Looks good! I don't know what the attraction to those ol' radios are, but I like em (maybe because they sound old like the truck is). I put one in myself and keep a few spares around.

Rebuilt factory speaker? I need the speaker on the 1970 blazer rebuilt, I did not know that was possible. Mine is the below dash mounted speaker.

Welcome to the crappy sounding radio club. I got one and its been rebiult and I can't say that I am pleased with the sound. I may swap it for another one day. Right now I carry a little boom box cd player on the seat. After paying 300.00 8 years ago for the radio.

Thanks, I do not know what year van it is from, but I am assuming a late model because there is an additional wire in the harness that I and other board members have decided is for an electric antenna or other accessory. I bought it from board member 71 super (Harold). They pop up on Feebay quite often, but I would buy from a board member here so that the condition can be verified.

Does Harold rebuild these and keep them on hnd or was this just one he had sitting around?

I think he had this as an extra one. I do not think he re-builds them, but you can PM him and ask.

You are right, by today's standards the sound quality sucks. It sounds great when the truck isn't running or moving! But, I figured this would be the case before I put the radio in and it is more for originality than anything else. Like I said in my earlier post, I will be installing a hidden "modern" setup so everyone can hear Bonzo beating the drums when I roll by!
