Hitch Question

Has anyone purchased a new hitch setup lately for one of our trucks? I am looking to see which one would need the least amount of modification to work on my 70 K-20. Looking for a Class 5. Any experience will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Frank

Re: Hitch Question

I was calling around today trying to find one for my 72 as a matter of fact. It seems that the same hitch fits all the way from 62-87.

Apparantly, Putnam makes one still but no one in the Fort Worth area had one, so I will search more tomorrow. If I find anything, I will post back ASAP.

Re: Hitch Question

I think most of the 70's and into the 80's fit our trucks... Just get the one with the same frame width.. 31.5 or so inches I think..

that's what I did...

Re: Hitch Question

This one just bolted on with grade 8 bolts. I think I had to drill two new holes out of six. It does not give a class on it but its rated 8000# with 800# 0f tongue weight. bought it through a local trailer dealer. Made by DrawTite

NAPA has them, and I think CPP does too.

Re: Hitch Question

You see them on craigslist all the time... search there if your not in a hurry for one... Not a hidden hitch but it should work well

Re: Hitch Question

all the big auto parts stores can get them, TX is right, they go from 63-87. I got one from Advance, class 4, IIRC it was about $120. You will have to drill holes.

Re: Hitch Question

Early Classic Enterprises makes a nice hidden hitch if you have rear sport bumper. I installed mine myself with no hassles. Even the hardware and wiring is included.

Re: Hitch Question

it's not hard to make one yourself. hit the boneyard for a liscence plate frame from any RWD GM. mine flips down and the hitch is completely hidden. I suggest bolting it to the side of the frame for extra strength.

My K20 has the factory steel, painted step bumper. Its low profile and heavier duty in my opinion then some of the step bumpers I have seen, and can accept a ball. However I need a heavier hitch, so I can either reinforce this bumper or attach & reinforce one of the off the shelf hitches.

I dont have that type of rear bumper, so a hidden hitch wont work.

Thanks!!

Re: Hitch Question

Yep, I have a sport bumper on my 72 GMC and I will be installing the ECE or CPP hidden hitch, because I also have airride, and will be towing.

Re: Hitch Question

I plan on doing the junkyard dive and grabbing one if I can't find one already removed for 5 bucks.

Re: Hitch Question

Basically there is 6-1/2" from the bottom of the frame and the bottom of the bumper. Anyone have a setup like this with an off the shelf hitch?

Thanks!
