Speedwarning question

I've seen speedwarning dash's before, although only here and in pics. Can someone please explain the reasoning and operation of the speedwarning feature? Thanks in advance.

If my research is correct, (Please tell me if I am wrong...) I believe it has to go with early warning devices.

I thought it was just a light that came on to warn you when you exceeded the Maximum speed limit! Like a govener but just a light......... I'm almost positive but hey I may be wrong....

the speed warning was a "safety" feature that only a select few trucks had, which makes them rare.
the speed warning speedometer was installed on on everything from C10's to C60's. however, you would see them mainly on public service vehicles if installed in C10, 20, and 30's. you would set the pointer on the speedo to a selected speed, let's say 55. when the vehicle reached that 56, an electrical contact was completed and a warning buzzer would alert you that you were "speeding". simple concept, but they are rare. just a speed warning dash (with no tach or vacuum/air gauge) can run upwards of $400. that's why the gauge cluster you referenced is so special and EXPENSIVE!!!!

Speed warning was not unique to trucks---it was an option on several cars (Buick, Olds, Pontiac etc.) and was pretty much dropped after cruse control came out. The intent was to place the indicator at a speed the driver selected as a "warning speed" that would kind of wake them up to how fast they were going. I don't believe it was used for safety but let's say the speed limit was 65---we all know no one did that but you would set you dial to 73 which was probably a speed you could get away with from a police ticket. If you had a fast vehicle and didn't pay attention to how fast you were driving, this device would let you know.
Ever have a car that drove so nice you find you are going a lot faster then you realized?? Better a buzz then a flashing light in you mirror!! It is actually a great idea and a neat option. THAT's how it was used. It dates back to around 61-2 on Buicks as a friend of mine had one we used in 63. Huck |

I traded a good used working dash for the speed warning dash from a man that didn't want to fix it. I gave him a old dash that I had redone. Even trade. I then took mine apart and added the speed warning part out of his since the dash was broken at the steering column.
It works with a seat buzzer hooked to it but I just leave it sitting at 100 so it want go off.

You can probably pick one up at a slavage yard for under $25. for the cluster. I would buy every one I could find for $50. Huck
