laying out with a stepside

my brothers '62 stepside has the torsion bar front suspension and that cool triangulated setup in the rear.

I'm trying to figure out exactly how low we can go, and if we can lay frame, what it's going to take. we had a thought, briefly, of body dropping it and laying body. This would save us a couple inches.... but the lowest we can get the bed is still about 4-5inches from the ground using a 29" wheel.

About that low..
If you want to go lower you will have to raise the rear fenders, i didnt want to so thats where i stopped. The tires sit about 1/2" frome the botttom of the rear fenders and will still roll just in case something stupid happens.

I dig the body work on the fender/grill combo. what tire/wheel is that?

also, is is just suspension dropped or bd? if it's a bd... how much? thanks!

The tire size is 255/45/20 and as far as the bd no it has a new frame under with 2x3 tubing but technically if it had a "Z" on the stock frame it would have a 2 1/2" one, but with the new frame its made in. if that helps you some. As far as the body work i cant take credit for any of the frontend stuff its a one piece fiberglass tilt frontend.

NA im good on mine thats where i want it, i could have built the front half a little different and got it to lay the same amount as a PB kit, just wanted to keep it pretty level with the back and not go through all that work of raising rear fenders for another 1 1/4

But yeah Dustin you can do what the kid said and she will lay out.

you're talking laying frame though, right? I'm a fan of Slammed66's and his appears to be basically laying body:

It will most likely lay body before frame because the frame is a little higher than the rockers. My stance is about as low as you can go in the back without making some adjustments, or you could use a different wheel/tire combo and get it laid out, mine will probably drag with some 15's

another question.. kinda unrelated. what kinda of steel for a new backhalf? 2x4, or 3x3, or 2x3? what wall thickness?

yeah I think we will probably raise the fender a little... and possible stretch it down a little two (like 1-2 inches). between those two things, we should pick up around 4 inches I'd think. I figured I can safely drop the hood 6" over the engine without the air filter getting in the way. I can't think of anything else that would pose a problem with a big bd.

2x3 .120 is what i used on the steel.

you could rework the fenders and take some of the curve out to the body line and gain some too but yeah raise them up and add at the bottom back to the step and that should get closer. And the trans tunnel my need some height to it depending on if you already have a tall in it or not, mine needs a tall trans hump now and maybe a little more but im just going to make it.
