Hey guys:
How do you remove the ignition switch from dash? Is there a clip behind it or it just screws out of the dash?

You have to insert a paper clip, or small stiff piece of wire in the little hole by the key while the key is in the accessory position. Wiggle it and the lock portion should come out. Then just unscrew the front bezel piece, and will all come apart.

Once you remove the ring (in the front) it will come out...The pain is getting it back together (all in reverse).

Thanks for the replies. My problem is the bezel on the dash is not coming off. Does it screw in or slide in?

I think the actual bezel itself unscrews. I think you have to remove whats inside of the bezel first though. If that makes sense.

Take the passengers door lock out, take it to a locksmith and have him cut a key from the code stamped on it.... If the locks are original the key will fit the ignition.

and if that fails, you can drill out the ignition switch, or beat on it with a hammer and a large punch.
I've personally done the latter twice with no dash dammage.... but it CAN happen if you get stupid with the hammer... or if you have bad aim.

Ya it has been so long since I took it apart like 10 years ago so no idea where the key is

Man Im glad I logged on today...Im at work and my jet is broke so Im just sitting here wasting time!

Im in the same situation....dont have the right key, so as soon as I get home Ill take the passenger door lock and see what happens..

Question though, why the passenger and not the driver??? Whats the difference??

Well, some hamering and drilling did it. I got some scratches on the dash but boy that was a pain. I had to cut the bezel. Although it was old and chipped but now I have to buy a new one. I even don't know if anybody sells them.

Most Classic Chev truck goodie vendors sell the bezel for the switch. The new switch and lock cylinder are still available through most parts houses although you will probably have to special order them.

Just a note from a guy who has been at this for a long time. I never throw a car key away if I junk out a rig or find one in a junk car or have one left that didn't go with a car I sold. That has saved my bacon more than once when I didn't have a key for a customers car or when the customer locked the car and left it in the way of everything going on.

If there is a code number it will be on the passengers door lock 95% of the time. That's just the way GM did it.

Thanks for the info...hopefully the passenger lock will work!

As for the bezel ECE or LMC sell them....only thing is the spacer in the back isnt made anymore from what Im being told, so keep yours....
