my '71 LWB project - carb'd 6.0L gen III etc
figured I should start one of these. Been 3 years since I brought the truck home...$500 for a roller w/o engine or trans. Bed sides were good, frame good, 12 bolt rear and one fender. Scrapped the rest pretty much. I can't find the pics right now of the truck when I towed it home.
Picked up a cab in TN off a board member, it was shot in the lowers and cab mounts...but the windshield channel and upper areas were decent. So I got a crash course in cab fixin' LOL. Frame was stripped down and coated with Eastwood rust encapsulator.

general cab fixin pics.....
I did the driver side w/ sawzall and cutoff wheels....had enough and bought a plasma cutter. The other side went much smoother and then the bed too. Working in my small 30x30 garage w/ plasma and a 110V Lincoln welder.

rear end build....had a guy shorten the housing 1" and weld on 9" ford ends from Moser...stuffed it with an Eaton diff, 3.42 gears, Moser axles
truck will see some 1/4 mile action with drag radials or slicks...so I wanted the C clips gone.

Re: my '71 LWB project - carb'd 6.0L gen III etc
applied the 2004 GM quiksilver metallic with a cheap gun for the inside cab, firewall, and jambs.
test fitting the seats I'd like to use...2004 GTO buckets. comfy but tall back. Not sure yet if these will stay or something shorter.

Re: my '71 LWB project - carb'd 6.0L gen III etc
front suspension is done...steering column disassembled, painted, and put in. using a wheel from a 73-87 for now. 2.5" drop spindles from ECE...stock disc brake setup. rear is dropped 4" with just springs.
Steering and brakes are done except realized I can't find the dust shields...need to find a set of those...now waiting for the motor. I'll post up motor pics in the next couple weeks....

Re: my '71 LWB project - carb'd 6.0L gen III etc
Plan for the truck is Silver all over, with black accents..
Planning to keep the lower black trim and go with 18" black center wheel of some type. 30" tires to fill the wheel wells up. Engine is a 2001 6.0L LQ4 core...+030 and stuffed with 10.5:1 forged pistons from Diamond, Z06 cam out of a 2004 vette, with 317 casting heads milled slightly and my port work (nothing major). Dual plane performer RPM intake, 750 vacuum secondary holley, MSD 6010 box. 150hp plate nitrous shot. Shooting for a 400rwhp package on motor, and 500+ on spray....might need more cam to get there we'll see. Headers from a 98-02 Fbody, TH400 long tail trans and a one piece drive shaft.

Nice project. I love to see the carbed gen III's. Where'd you get the intake and msd 6010 and what did they set you back if you don't mind?

Re: my '71 LWB project - carb'd 6.0L gen III etc
Leevon, thanks. The MSD6010 I picked up off LS1tech.com basically new in box but opened for $260 shipped. They don't pop up often.
The intake I was going to buy at Summit, but were on back order. I checked at Advance Auto and got it there. Friend of mine works there and Nov. employees get 30% discount...so it cam out around $260 delivered. I was surprised. nuke1 - thanks

Re: my '71 LWB project - carb'd 6.0L gen III etc
Nice! That's what's planned for mine as well, a carb'd LS motor. I'm hoping to build a 427 off a LSX block but will use a LQ4 or LQ9 and build a 408 if funds are tight when I get to that point. Besides what all went on my "shop truck"...I just have an empty frame right now.
Do you plan on relocating the coils? Mast has a nice setup that puts them behind the valve covers, for that old school look.

Re: my '71 LWB project - carb'd 6.0L gen III etc
68GMCCustom
yes I probably will relocate the coil packs....like to use the cast valve covers from GM performance with the "chevrolet" script on them. Those covers don't have provision for mounting coils. I was in the air about the 408 as well...but the 4" cranks are still pretty steep for my budget on this one. In a few years when there's more of them on the market used I may pick one up. If the economy really tanks maybe people will start selling their LSx blocks cheap LOL.

Re: my '71 LWB project - carb'd 6.0L gen III etc
Is there an easy way to change a Gen III engine over to single coil with a MSD or similiar ignition box?

Re: my '71 LWB project - carb'd 6.0L gen III etc
thanks for the comments guys.
67 C30... The MSD 6010 box is a standalone unit that will fire the stock coil packs.. It's a little over $300. The front cover shown uses an adapter to the front of the cam, and a Ford distributor. The cover and adapter alone are like $450. In my opinion the best option is the 6010 box and the stock coils.

Re: my '71 LWB project - carb'd 6.0L gen III etc
been way too long for an update....I'm lazy, it was cold this winter...blah blah. Last month I been getting it going again....
Ported a set of 317 heads, lightly...just a clean up really. LH8 oil pan from a Hummer, worked out real nicely. Engine is 10.8:1 with Diamond +030 pistons. Z06 cam from a 2002 covette
