Protrash hatch
Nothing too exciting but a fun day of work to take care of something Ive wanted to get done for awhile. I picked up this tonneau cover over 2 years ago and havent installed it until today. The guy I got it from had restored a 66 and added this to it; took it a car show and someone offered him a bunch of $$$$$ for the truck and he sold it. The buyer didnt want the cover so he removed it. Gaylords are expensive covers and this had a beautiful red paint that I had to get rid of before installing.
Im tired from wrestling this thing around today; very heavy! Degreased it and sanded it down w/ some 400. Squirted it with some grey primer and threw it on. I'll put the struts on tomorrow. Really nice not to have this in the way anymore!!

Re: Protrash hatch
I plan on installing one on my truck as well. I've been looking at Checker Product's covers as they are flush mount. Your looks great and doesn't appear to add to the height of the bed much at all. The Checker covers don't cover the bed rails at all though which means the stake pocket holes will need to be filled but I always do that anyhow. I like yours though, Gaylord's are probably the best money can buy. Great job and a great find!

Re: Protrash hatch
very nice look. I like the tailgate too. That big back window looks sweet! Make sure you bring that truck my our Peoria Firefighter's Charities in January. You can get the flyer from my website or in the Southwest forum.

Re: Protrash hatch
Got those struts on yet? I'd like to see how/where they mount and the hinge.
If you don't mind that is. |

Re: Protrash hatch
Thanx for all the compliments; Ive stopped and looked at every time I walk by outside as it really surprised me how much it nicer it looks. Of course I never had a bed floor or was planning on running one.
I got lazy and was sore after wrestling around w/ that thing on Saturday. I did not put in the struts yet. Previous owner said they go 47 1/2" back to the mount. Just a triangle piece of metal. Kizer.....there is really no hinge to speak of; sort of 'tab A goes in slot B' type thing on the front edge of the bed. You mount a little 'L' bracket and the cover has the horizontal tab that slides in. You lift the cover way up and the tab slides in. Its angled up so the cover cant be pulled off unless raised back up again. I will update this when I get them in.

Re: Protrash hatch
Oh so the little tabs keep the top from being removed and I'm sure the weight factors in some too.
I'm not a super fan of covers, but honestly I have one on the back of my Jeep and its way cool for keeping things safe and dry. Thats why I'm kinda drawn to this. |

Re: Protrash hatch
Ok.....this is due to kizer's request. I went outside and braved mid-60's temps to install my struts on the tonneau cover.
First pic is drivers side and second is the 'hinge' assembly I was describing earlier.
