I had a skin folded locally, out of 16 guage sheet. To take off the lower skin, I drilled the spotwelds out, then cut across the gate with a die grinder(what a mess of grit that makes!) After i got it done , I felt it was too plain......so I frenched 6-3" round taillites, & the L plate into the gate. also filled & smoothed the original tail & backup lites. It gives the truck a little different look.....

Sir Mike's
Hello Mario.
Currently I have the the whole Sir Michaels combination, roll pan, taligate relocater, and smooth tailgate skin. The smooth tailgate skin actually does not require you to remove the pre-existing tailgate skin, rather it goes on top of it. On mine it was welded into place and was filled (note: doing the finishing work on this thing is a real barrel of laughs, for whatever reason [before it's primed that is] it will look like it's off on an angle. You have to use a straightedge as a marker when working on this) The piece itself is fairly heavy and appears to be pretty good quality. The tailgate relocater kit is a stock one that you see everywhere.

I put one from Brothers on mine. It was $99. Its real heavy and easy to install. I f**d it up tho. Before you weld, check to see if you have any dents in your tail gate. DO NOT pull the cover in to them. It will leave the impression of a dent in it. Thats where I messed up. Other than that, it just welds over the old tailgate. I haven't gotten a relocator yet, I just pull the two arms in to open it. Someday I'll get one. Good luck, Jeff.

Be careful when you put the skin on top of the existing tailgate(at least on some). When I did that w/my 67's tailgate, you could tell it wasn't even/flush w/the top of the bedsides. I cut mine off & had a friend weld the skin in place of the original metal. Nice & even, one side to the other.
