sport mirrors

I have a 1975 SWB coming out of the body shop and last night the doors came out of the paint booth and almost gave me a heart attack. And I guess I could still have one! My question is this. Are sport mirrors and "dumbos" inter-changeable on how they mount on the door? I forgot to have my cousin (the painter) weld up the two holes on the door where the original "dumbos" mounted before painting. I have already purchased NOS sport mirrors and want to use them. He thought that the sport mirrors would bolt up with the two exsisting holes. The doors came from a donor that must have had factory trailering mirrors at one time because they had a lower third hole, but we did fill that one prior to painting. Any insight would greatly be appreciated.

I believe they use different holes.

I'm pretty sure they are different too. I konw I had to drill when I put the dumbo mirors on my blazer.

Thanks guys for all of your input and to you Ken for the image. My next question may even sound "stupider" than my original question so please bear with me. My doors have just been painted and are an hour away from my house and I will not be able to pick them up until Monday morning. My sport mirrors are packed away and I won't be able to get to them until Sunday. So I'm freaking out because my doors are painted out and I want to use the sport mirrors. I'm not quite sure now if I mount the sport mirrors in the "dumbo" location am I going to be able to cover the holes already in the door? The ones we didn't fill. Any thoughts?

I had dumbo mirrors on mine, took them off and installed some sport type mirrors. I was able to cover the 2 top holes (from the dumbo mirror) but I had to drill another hole between them to mount the sports. Here’s the problem, the sports are too low to get a good view out of. None of this is an issue for me since mirror style is still undecided and bodywork is down the road.

If redoing the doors is out of the question you may need to keep the larger mirrors.

I'd say,... weld them shut,... and re-paint your door. It will be easier to match the paint now. Your cousin,... might not be too happy, but that's the only correct way to do it. Hmmm,... maybe a two-tone paint job is in your future?

Thanks again guys for all your input. I guess I'll head over on Monday with a sport mirror and see how they line up, if at all. I don't mind if they sit a bit low. From what I've read nobody seems to think they work well. They just complete the look I'm going for. My cousin still has to shoot the hood so re-doing the doors wouldn't be the end of the world. I just won't be his favorite person for a while.........

S10fan, I like the look of those mirrors, nice choice! Like the rectangular sport mirrors, they give the truck a more classic look than the "dumbos" do.

The doors on my '86 had both sets of holes... dumbos and sports. When I got the truck, the dumbos were on it. I found some sports at the pick-and-pull and put them on. In case you didn't know, there are some braces that go inside the door. Make SURE you use these braces, or else the mirrors will dance like crazy and eventually crack the outer sheetmetal of the door.

Dude those are going to rock with the round headlights. What all did those come on? I know they were Camaro, but did they come on Nova, Chevelle, or ??

Ken,... For Camaros,... those mirrors were 1967 only. In '68 they went to a retangle shaped mirror head. I have that mirror on my '67.

My 65 Chevelle has them, or should I say it has one. LOL. I’ve been looking for the “right” mirror for a while. Looked at all of them, peepers, billet, and sports, ended up going with something I already had. Anyway, Chevelle, Impala, Nova, (mid to late 60’s) all had the “Bowtie” mirror. The truck won’t see these for a while though, too many other parts to acquire before I get started on “Project Heap”.

Oh, I agree with you on the round mirror with round headlights!

I can't answer the "hole" question,mine had dumbos.

Mine are on the way from eBay. I can measure the one on my Chevelle tomorrow and post the results. Yes, repos are plentyful.

Here's a direct comparison between dumbos and sports/standard mirrors. The RED cirles are the OE standard mirrors holes and the BLUE is for the dumbos. You'll have to weld and repaint to use sport mirrors. Look closely around the red circled holes and you can see where the old sport mirror gasket used to be to see how wide it is.
