Replacing the Factory radio?

Hey Guys, I've got a 92 Silverado with the stock cassette deck set up. I bought a install kit to put a Cd player in there, but the plugs are not exact. Anyone have a any experience with this kind of installation? Any help at all would be
great. thanks

Re: Replacing the Factory radio?

Hello,

on the bottom of a steering column under the dash, there is a box that the two radio plugs plug into,

The plugs running into the silver box from the big wiring harness is what actually goes into the adaptor which then goes to the stereo (speakers), the plugs going into the bottom of the silver box is the "two peice" factory stereo plugs these can be unplugged and take out both peices of the factory stereo (radio above heater controls and in dash cassete thing) and throw them away, remove the bolt/screw holding the little silver box on the sterring column and toss the box .

so the plugs that you pulled out of the silver box are now hanging, these are the 4 speakers.

the plugs do not have a lot of harness behind them and when plugged into the adaptor and the adaptor is spliced to the stereo, they BARELY make it over to the hole where the stereo goes replacing the tape deck.

i'll try to get pics of where the silver box is located if you cant find it, its hard to explain but you just need focusing ability and flexible hands to put the plugs in the adaptor blindly in the dash.

Hope this helped a little

,Brandon

Re: Replacing the Factory radio?

I'm sorry, the silver box that im talking about is mounted on a bracket right over the gas pedal next to the sterring column,

Re: Replacing the Factory radio?

Thanks, that was the thing I had missed. Is that an amp? Well whatever it is after I got it loose( kinda of tight there) I was able to pull the plugs out. These plugs did match up with the replacement harness. Your right, the plugs barely get to the opening. Now for the speakers... Thanks Again

That silver box is the receiver/tuner. If it works, don't throw it away. Put it on e-bay or something. I just paid a hundred bucks for one.

Re: Replacing the Factory radio?

wow, i threw mine out. lol...

For speakers, i got 4 4x6 sony speakers in the factory spots, two in dash, two in rear pillar. They were 35$ a pair at walmart.

My advice- since 4x6 speakers areent that bassy and are kinda "tinny" i got a 6$ RCA cord (red and white) and ran that from my RCA Output ports on the back of my stereo to a kenwood amp i got at a local pawnshop for 20$, then over from the amp to a Tube style subwoofer using MONSTER speaker cable (dont get a tube woofer) behind the seat. tube woofers sound kinda hollow. get a regular woofer if you get one

it sounds awesome and was very cheap set up to run, the most expensive part was the 4 speakers.

i can now hear my pink floyd over my bad transmission bearing [laugh]

Re: Replacing the Factory radio?

Hey, Thanks for the speaker tips. I will check into them. I put my stock radio
on Ebay. Hey, who knows, maybe someone wants a good stock radio.
