Need a new tranny
I'm looking into getting a new tranny for my '84. I have recently built a 355 engine with est. 400 hp. My original 700r is crap , leaking, shuddering etc...any suggestions. I want an overdrive for highway use.

th400 3 speed? they're pretty solid and i have an extra, but you are quite far away. Browse the craigslist.

Re: Need a new tranny
me personally,if you got that much power, you need to make sure that the tranny is going to hold up.Therefore, buying a used transmission is out of the question.I would look for a 700r4 setup for hiperformance, with some kind of warranty.Or you will be back again. There is hardly a transmission from our trucks that hasn't been around the block a million times. Some guys like the 4l60e,and 80,but I don't know much about how much work goes into converting them,as they are in computer controlled machines. But the one that was in the silverado I used to have shifted like BUUUUTer!Hope that helped any, cheapest is 700r4

Re: Need a new tranny
A 700R4 from 88-93 should have all the upgrades stock, but you can build one to handle more a LOT more power (like 600lb/ft of torque), I wouldn't run one out of the junkyard, but if you need a donor, get one out of a vette or F-body as it will have more hd pieces.
4L60E is an electronic version of a 4L60 (700R4).

Re: Need a new tranny
I'm not really looking for a junkyard unit. I have a 4l80 e from a 2001 van , but I'm not sure what's involved in making it work. Although I would have to build the 4l80 (fire damage). I looked into getting built tranny but unsure of what name brand to go with... they all look and sound the same to me.

Mine is half of Level 3 and Level 4. Love it. Custom built locally. It's fun to drive. |
