RAMJET crate motor EFI fuel pump

A buddy of mine splurged and bought a 350 Ramjet crate motor for his 68 step side. He already has a rear mount aluminum fuel tank and he was going to run an external electric fuel pump. I have heard nothing but bad things about the reliability of the electric pumps when run at the high pressure that EFI requires. The tank he has does not currently have a provision for a drop in fuel pump. Does anyone have any quick and easy suggestions? If not any hard and difficult suggestions?

I don't know where you heard that about fuel pumps almost all cars from the late 80's up use them. I have only replaced three in over a million miles.

External as in mounted to the frame rail, not in the pump. I am referring to external pumps, not internal. I'm aware that cars since the 80's used internal. My buddy is wanting to use an external, where it is not submerged in the gas to keep it cool.

Re: RAMJET crate motor EFI fuel pump

I've replaced a zillion in-tank pumps at work in the past 8 years turning wrench professionally. I've replaced 2 external pumps and they were just for bleeding off residual pressure when the car was shut off and causing a slow to start condition. Most of those internal pumps were for outright failure and required the car to be towed in. The only reason to replace the entire pump for those 2 externals is that warranty doesn't want you to just put a check valve in.
As long as you mount the external pump low relative to the bottom of the tank, you shouldn't have any problems.
...And make sure the pump is rated at the proper pressure & volume for your application.

Re: RAMJET crate motor EFI fuel pump

Was the experience with the externally mounted pumps with 30-40 psi fuel pressure needed for EFi,or low pressure for TBI or carb?

That's pretty much been exactly my experience too. Replaced many dozens of in-tank pumps. Very few external pumps. Doesn't matter what the system pressure is; the in-tank pumps aren't nearly as reliable.

Re: RAMJET crate motor EFI fuel pump

I have an external pump running my Ramjet 350 and haven't had any problems. It doesn't have a ton of miles on the motor, but so far so good.

Re: RAMJET crate motor EFI fuel pump

Im glad to see someone started a thread like this. Im in the same situation. I want to go with an internal pump though. Is there anyone who could tell me what a good set up would be? (like what kind of pump to use, and wether or not it will fit into the stock gas tank that fit in the truck, its an 86 GMC) Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: RAMJET crate motor EFI fuel pump

I use an inline E2000 fuel pump available at any parts store. Works fine.
